People 25 to 45 years old take vocal lessons more seriously. They choose a comfortable training format, don’t burn out after a couple of classes, and don’t try to save money on a mentor.

They are highly motivated. Students who are 14 to 20 years old are winded.

They’re looking for “magic pills” and “smart tricks” to help them start singing like Ariana Grande or Harry Styles in a week. Ideally, even without a teacher.

Where to start learning.

The main thing in vocal training, as in any other business, is discipline. If you study without a clear plan, there will be no progress.

If there is discipline, vocals will be relatively inexpensive. A person can change studios and teachers ten times, but he will move once he develops a systematic approach.

The lack of discipline in vocals is not only optional. A non-obvious point significantly affects the lessons’ effectiveness – the need for essential knowledge.

It is only possible to look for a vocal teacher who understands what relaxation is, how breathing affects singing, why to observe the rhythm, and what place intonation has in vocals.

  • Ideal. You work with a teacher once or twice a week. Calls can be individual or small groups. In addition, every day, practicing on their own also for 15-20 minutes and send recordings of exercises to the teacher. He tells you what you need to fix. This format develops very quickly.

Zoom calls or Skype once or twice a week is necessary to consolidate the material and to practice vocal techniques: mix, belting, falsetto, and twang.

If you’ve been practicing with a teacher for three months and still need to move on to songs, that’s a wake-up call. You can be bold in changing teachers.

How is a group class better than a one-on-one class?

It is commonly thought that practicing one-on-one is always more relaxed. But in vocals, groups of three or four people have more advantages.

In the first stage, getting into a friendly community is important. Therefore it is essential to pick up students of the same level with similar goals and objectives.

In this case, there is a “synergy effect” – people unite and motivate each other. Also, the teacher’s task is to create a comfortable atmosphere on the calls so that no one is embarrassed. 

Groups should be at most five people.

How to choose a teacher

If something from this point falls out, this is a reason to change the teacher or think about it.

  • Experience. If the vocal teacher has been teaching for less than three years, you should not go to him – to train and “stuff up bumps”; he will be on you.
  • Demo. Your teacher should have video and audio of how he sings. It will help you understand whether he has succeeded as a vocalist.
  • The teacher’s voice. Students copy the teacher’s voice and can adopt their pitch at the initial stage. So you should fall in love with the voice of your teacher. If you do not like his manner of singing, it is better to refuse the mentor.
  • Versatile teacher. Work with female and male vocal cords must be different. To find out right away if the teacher has experience working with guys and girls, and ask to see examples. If they do not, it is better not to go to such a specialist. He can accidentally damage the ligaments.
