What to Look for When Buying a New Mattress

On average, most people spend one-third of their life sleeping. Like anyone else, each time you wake up, you want to feel refreshed and revitalized. Indeed, the mattress you ultimately decide to purchase will make a big difference in the manner in which you sleep.

Buying a new mattress is one investment you should consider carefully, as they vary significantly depending on your personal preferences. Here are a few things you should consider when buying a new mattress.

Mattress Firmness

Mattresses can vary in firmness, and you may prefer a soft, medium or firm variety. Brands will often provide customers with a firmness scale to give you an indication of where each mattress sits. Medium is the most common choice, but regardless of your decision, you should make sure it has adequate back support.

Even a softer mattress can have underlying structural strength to reduce the likelihood of sagging. You should also consider that sharing a bed with another person can make choosing the perfect mattress a trickier process, as their idea of comfort may be different than yours.

Your Budget

Mattresses come in a range of price points, but sometimes you will be paying more than you should just because it’s a recognized brand. Knowing this, you should be prepared to pay for a good mattress, but know they can still be affordable.

Additionally, don’t judge a mattress by its label. Instead, try to determine whether it suits your needs. For example, is it soft enough? Is it suitable for a restless sleeper? Or, is it supportive for chronic pain sufferers?

Sleeping Habits

The manner in which you sleep should also come into consideration. For example, a side sleeper may like a pillow top design to help disperse their weight and keep the mattress in shape. A pillow top mattress has extra padding, which can make it more comfortable. However, this might not suit someone who sleeps on their back or stomach, as they may find a medium or medium to firm mattress to be a better fit.

The Size

For those with an existing bed base, deciding on the size of the new mattress will be easy. If you are shopping for a package, your overall room space, height, weight, relationship status and age may influence the size of your bed. Mattresses come in a range of sizes, with the most common being twin, double, queen and king.

Extra Features

Although there is sure to be a standard mattress available that meets your needs, you may prefer something more customized. Some mattresses give you the option to be height adjustable, which is ideal for anyone with a medical condition.

For example, some mattresses can be retrofitted for small space, which would work well in a campervan. Couples who can’t agree on the firmness of their bed don’t have to sleep in separate rooms. Mattresses can be custom made with a half and half design to keep everyone happy.

Make a Wise Investment

Your new mattress will be used regularly for the next few years, so this purchasing decision shouldn’t be made lightly. Before buying a plush, new mattress, think about your preferred level of firmness. People often assume they will like a soft base when in reality most will fall into the medium range. Other things to consider include sleep habits, body temperature and the size of the room.
