What The Pandemic Has Taught Us To Value

The past 15 months have not made our lives easy, to say the least.

With life slowly returning to the “new normal,” however, there’s light at the end of the tunnel at last.

After so much time cooped up in our homes, we can indulge in the simple joys the pandemic has deprived us of.

We can see our friends, take trips, eat indoors — the possibilities feel endless. And, just as important, our kids can finally see their friends and get back to class.

The pandemic has been a nightmare for many of us.

But, looking back, it is possible to find the silver lining. We all learn from bad times, and the pandemic is no exception.

What The Pandemic Has Taught Us To Value

Being deprived of so much has taught us what we truly value, and what we shouldn’t take for granted.

Here’s a look at three simple things the pandemic has taught us to not take for granted.

Our Mental Health

Our health is the most obvious thing the pandemic has taught us to value. Faced with the possibility that we could become fatally ill, we’ve come to appreciate how important our health truly is.

This includes our mental health.

In any given year, about one in four Americans suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder.

  • 9-10% of Americans ages 18 and over will suffer from a depressive illness any given year.
  • About 18% of Americans ages 18-54 will suffer from an anxiety disorder.

Those of us who’ve had our own battles with mental health, or those of us who’ve watched loved ones battle with their mental health, know how difficult it can be.

The pandemic has had a serious impact on everyone’s mental health.

As a result, mental health has become less stigmatized, and we’ve learned more about available resources. We’ve also learned a lot about the value of self-care.

Our Kids’ Education

Many K-12 students haven’t stepped foot in a classroom in over a year.

Even for the most dedicated and studious, remote education simply has not been able to replace in person education. The internet is no substitute for the classroom.

Break time in the backyard or the park is no substitute for recess.

Our kids’ learning experience has been compromised.

Without the social benefits of going to school, or the stimulating environment of the classroom, it’s been hard for them to remain focused and inspired. And there is only so much we can do.

Still, the pandemic has taught us that there are alternative ways to provide our kids an education that will stimulate their minds and imaginations and open doors to prosperous careers.

One way is to hire private tutors. They provide the sort of one-on-one attention that teachers cannot, even in the classroom.

What The Pandemic Has Taught Us To Value

For New Yorkers, there are plenty options for kids who want private tutoring in NYC.

There are also tutors all over the country who can help kids go from As and Bs to straights As across the board.

Friends and Family

This summer will be full of reunions with the people we’ve missed. (Remember to gather safely.)

After so much time apart, it’s more clear than ever before how valuable spending time with friends and family is.

Sure, reuniting with our loved ones after so much time apart might be a little awkward at first.

We’ll inevitably find ourselves asking how to greet someone, or what to say in group conversations, or how to talk about the past year of our lives without going on and on.

That’s okay. We’re all in the same boat. We’re all a little rusty.

Social distance makes the heart grow fonder.

With the return to the normal, let’s not take for granted what we’ve been deprived of for so long.
