What Is NDIS?

NDIS stands for the National Disability Insurance Scheme. NDIS was established in July 2013 as an Australian Government scheme that funds disability costs.

With roughly 4.3 million Australians having disabilities, the scheme would usher in new opportunities by providing greater choice and more control to people with disabilities.

Do you want to apply for NDIS? Those with physical, intellectual, sensory, cognitive, and psychosocial disabilities qualify for the support.

Improved Life Quality with the NDIS

The NDIS promised to provide over $22 billion yearly to approximately 500,000 Australians with permanent and significant disabilities.

What Is NDIS?

For some, this would be the first time they received the disability support required.

NDIS: what does it mean?

N- Nationality

D- Disability

NDIS is accessible to anyone who qualifies with a physical, sensory, intellectual, cognitive, or psychosocial disability. Eligible people and children with developmental delays can be assessed for early intervention support.

I- Insurance

The scheme guarantees support to Australians if they, their children, or loved ones are born with or acquire a permanent and significant disability.

S- Scheme

The NDIS is designed to assist people in getting the support they need to improve their skills and independence over time.

How Does the NDIS Work?

As Australia’s first national scheme for people living with disabilities, it offers direct funding to individuals. Below is how the scheme works:

  • Determine your eligibility

You need to establish if you’re eligible for the support. You can answer some questions on the NDIS website by checking out the eligibility checklist for guidance. However, it is up to the NDIA to determine your eligibility.

  • Apply for the NDIS

Once you meet the eligibility criteria, ask to become a participant by finishing the Access Request Form. You should receive an ‘access decision’ letter.

  • Create your plan

Typically, this is a written agreement developed by you. It is important to note that everyone’s plan is unique based on circumstances and the level of disability. The NDIS will go over some questions about how you are coping in varying areas of your life, the goals you wish to pursue, and the help and support you require. It helps them develop the right plan for you.

  • Use your plan

With a plan in place, some people will assist you in starting it. You should understand your plan to manage it efficiently. While self-management is a choice, you can use the services of an NDIS plan manager (who will manage your billing and budgets) or be agency-managed by the NDIA. Either way, you can always change your plan management arrangement whenever you like. There are varying types of budgets that you should also know, and professionals with NDIS expertise can help.

  • Review your plan and goals

It is an excellent opportunity to affirm if your support is working for you and helping you get closer to goal achievement. Contemplate what has worked well and what needs adjusting due to your changing requirements and capacities. Remember you can always submit a Change in Circumstances request when your condition or living arrangement changes. You can also review your plan decision whenever you think that a decision about your plan was wrong. Most importantly, it’s advisable to adequately prepare for your plan review to ensure you get as much support as possible.

Conclusion

The National Disability Insurance Scheme ensures Australians with disabilities access the support they need to live their lives to their best.

It is dedicated to providing customised support packages that boost the independence and life quality of individuals with permanent and significant disabilities.
