What Type of Puppy Is Right For You?

There are many adorable puppies for sale in Ohio. Before you choose one, however, there are several things you must take into consideration. One of the biggest problems with getting a puppy, or any type of pet for that matter, is choosing one that ends up not being a good match for you and your family. When you are ready to pick out your pet, you need to remember to choose one that will fit your family dynamic as well as your living situation. When it comes to size, for example, a Great Dane may not be the right choice for you if you live in a small apartment and have no yard. Here are our top tips to help you make the right choice:

Evaluate the Characteristics of the Breed

Before you pick out a puppy, research the typical traits of some of your favorite breeds. Learn about their temperament, energy levels, how much attention they require, and how well they behave around children or other pets. Different breeds have different characteristics that make them better for some environments than others. If you do your research before you start your search, you will have a much better idea of what type of dog you are looking for.

Think About Your Family’s Needs

Think about your reasons for wanting to get a dog. Do you want the dog for protection, or are you looking for a playmate for your children? Many breeds will serve both purposes equally well, but the age of the children have an impact on the type of dog you end up choosing. If you are getting dog for an elderly parent, you will want one that does not require a lot of extra care or additional work. If you want a dog that has special skills, like learning how to perform specific tasks, ask a trainer or breeder, and find out what breed works best for what you hope for your dog to be able to do.

Meet the Puppy Before You Make Your Decision

Before deciding on any one puppy, meet a few of them in person. Spend some time playing with them to see how well they respond to you and your family. All puppies are cute and can turn on the charm with a quick look or bark. It’s important, however, to make sure that there is a connection between the pet and the person. This initial bond is what the rest of the relationship will be built on. It is important to lay the foundation so the bond can continue to grow. Establishing a positive connection will ensure that both the puppy and owner are happy and able to enjoy each other’s company for many years to come.

There is more to choosing a puppy than just finding one that looks nice. Puppies are more like people than many people believe. That is why their owners often refer to them as their “kids.” Pets become part of the family, so choosing the right one is an important decision that shouldn’t be made without some forethought. When you are ready to choose a puppy, make sure you are well-informed and know exactly what you are looking for. The process will go much more quickly and you will be more satisfied with the results.

Another thing to consider when selecting a dog is excess shedding. If you don't see yourself vacuuming everyday to clean up excess shedding then there are some dogs that you shouldn't consider such as bulldogs. Shedding is a huge issue that many dog owners don't consider, they find out after the fact which can be too late.
