As a senior, you have been used to being free to do what you want. That’s why you might find it hard to imagine being unable to perform those tasks.

However, this is the reality for a lot of seniors. Age comes with certain changes that can affect a senior’s psychological and physical state.

Some of these changes will make it incredibly hard for seniors to take care of themselves.

Due to this, a lot of adults end up moving to assisted living facilities.

As a result of this, seniors are often hesitant to seek help (even when this help is needed) for fear of being put in a senior living facility.

This could be a big mistake. Failure to seek help can backfire and lead to you losing your independence.

Three Ways To Help Seniors Stay Independent

It may seem counterintuitive, but the best way to remain independent is to ask for help when you need it.

1. Ensure that your home is safe. This is because falls are usually devastating. They are the major cause of injuries that could put seniors in the hospital. Make adjustments to your home to ensure that it is easier to walk around. You can put grab bars close to the tub/shower and the toilet. You could also put one close to the steps. There’s no harm in also using a hand-held shower and shower chair.

Stop using runners and throw rugs to prevent tripping and falling. For people with tint-changing lenses, they need to remove them after entering their home so they can see well.

If you own bifocals or readers, try to be careful on the stairs.

2. Remain physically active. This will increase your energy and mobility while also reducing the risks of depression and dementia. Morning exercises will put your day on the right track, but exercising any time of the day is also alright. You can take walks alone or alongside your dog, perform household tasks or do outside chores like raking. If outside is too cold, you could walk inside the mall.

Try out new activities, so you can remain interested in being active. This could be a tai chi class, an exercise video, or swimming sessions. Exercise can be free or inexpensive.

If you enjoy walking, get non-skid shoes or senior shoes.

To maintain your strength, make use of water bottles or soup cans as free weights. Senior centers or Myrtle Beach retirement can even provide free or low-cost sessions.

3. Be socially engaged. Interaction with other people will stimulate the mind and help to preserve your memory. Talk to your friends, family, and co-workers. Make it important to eat with other people. There are senior centers that offer group meals – an opportunity to enjoy a cheap meal with your peers.

You could also volunteer to work on a project with an organization or visit a lonely friend or neighbor.

Another tip is to attend a class that will teach you something you’ve been meaning to learn. This will also give you the opportunity to meet new people.

Theatre groups and book clubs are also great ideas to improve relationships.
