The Narcissist Next Door: 10 Ways to Protect Yourself From Your Neighborhood Narcissist

Your home is supposed to be your sanctuary. But living near the neighborhood narcissist can make you feel uncomfortable in your own house. Their unreasonable demands and behavior can make you feel targeted and on edge. However, you don’t have to live in fear. Here are 10 ways you can protect yourself from the shenanigans of the narcissist next door.

1. Set Boundaries

Your neighborhood narcissist will flaunt boundaries that most people wouldn’t cross. They may do invasive things like using your pool or allowing their kids to play in your yard. To avoid liability issues and reclaim your space, it’s important to set firm, clear boundaries with the neighborhood narcissist. Remember that if you give an inch, they’ll usually take a mile, so don’t be too lenient with them.

2. Keep your Distance

Befriending a narcissist is often a bad idea. Even if you manage to get them on your side for a while, relationships with self-centered neighbors are usually tenuous. The minute you say or do something they don’t like, they’ll probably turn on you. And they might use the information they gleaned from being your “friend” against you. It’s usually better to keep your distance from difficult neighbors while still being polite. You don’t have to be rude to keep to yourself and maintain your privacy.

3. Be a Respectful Neighbor

Although the neighborhood narcissist doesn’t respect boundaries or social norms, that doesn’t mean you should sink to their level. Continue to be a considerate neighbor and think about how your behavior affects others. Keep your music at a reasonable volume, don’t park in other people’s spaces, and clean up after your pets.

The narcissist next door may try to find fault with your behavior so they can whine and make a fuss. But you’ll know that their complaints are unreasonable if you’re doing everything you can to be a respectful neighbor.

4. Document Everything

One of the best ways to protect yourself from the neighborhood narcissist is to document everything. Saving emails and text messages can help you build a repository of evidence should you ever need it. Installing cameras to catch their misbehavior is also a good strategy. You never know if the narcissist next door will report you to a third party or escalate the situation so much that you have to get law enforcement involved. So it’s wise to cover your bases and maintain documentation from the start.

5. Don’t Get Upset in Their Presence

Narcissists thrive on drama and negative emotions. So they’ll probably enjoy the fact that they’ve made you upset. Try not to give them the satisfaction of knowing they’ve perturbed you. Maintain a calm, even-keeled demeanor around them as much as possible. However, the narcissist next door is likely skilled at pushing people’s buttons. So don’t beat yourself up if you temporarily lose your cool and raise your voice a bit.

6. Build a Support Network

Being targeted by the neighborhood narcissist can be exhausting. That’s why it’s important to build a strong social support network that you can rely on. Try to befriend other neighbors who seem nice and normal to create a community. To get a break from the narcissist, attend events outside the neighborhood and socialize with people who aren’t in your geographical bubble. Additionally, let your existing group of family and friends know what’s going on so they can help you process your emotions around the situation.

7. Practice Self-Care

Taking time for yourself is also important when you’re dealing with a bully. Schedule regular alone time to give yourself opportunities to recharge. Whether you decide to watch TV or dive into a hobby, getting a break from the situation will help boost your mental health and well-being. Additionally, you’ll be able to handle conflict with your neighbor better if you’re feeling rested and relaxed.

8. Learn About Narcissism

You can’t protect yourself from the neighborhood narcissist if you don’t know what you’re up against. Research narcissism and learn about the traits they usually exhibit. Narcissists are self-centered and exaggerate their accomplishments. They display a lack of empathy and remorse, which often leads them to act in ways that hurt others, such as making promises they can’t keep. Gaining an understanding of this personality disorder can help you figure out how to handle the neighborhood bully.

9. Take Steps to Feel Safe at Home

Dealing with a neighborhood bully can make you feel unsafe or uneasy at home. Try to take steps to restore your sense of peace. Installing a security system or better locks may help you feel more secure. If your neighbor frequently trespasses on your property, consider getting a fence or putting up signage to deter them.

10. Don’t Retaliate

No matter how much your narcissistic neighbor annoys you, don’t stoop to their level and retaliate. Fighting fire with fire will just make the situation worse. The narcissist will feel emboldened by your actions and use them as justification to continue to torment you. It’s not always easy to be the bigger person, but taking the high road is definitely the right move.

Protect Your Family

It may seem counterintuitive to avoid or be nice to someone who’s nasty to you. But narcissists don’t play by the same rules as everyone else, so dealing with them requires a different approach. You may feel the desire to stand up to your family by telling off the narcissist or retaliating. But fighting back will only satisfy the narcissist’s need for negative attention and make the situation worse.

Instead, protect your family by making yourself a boring target. If you avoid giving the narcissist the emotional reaction they want, they’ll probably move on to another victim.
