The Busy Mum’s Guide To Self Care

Being a modern mum can feel like a juggling act sometimes.

You’ve got school runs, homework, extracurricular activities, and household responsibilities. Balancing it all with a career can be even tougher, with projects due, meetings to attend, and places to be…

You spend so much time looking after everyone else that it’s all too easy to forget about you

Although making time for yourself might feel selfish sometimes (mum guilt is very real), self-care is vital to leading a balanced and fulfilled life.

It can help reduce feelings of stress, decrease the chance of burnout, and even positively impact your family. But where do you even begin?

Here are a few tips to help get you started.

The Busy Mum's Guide To Self Care

Prioritize Hydration and Nutrition

Eating well and staying hydrated are essential to proper self-care, especially for busy mums.

Drinking water daily can aid digestion, regulate body temperature, prevent infections, and deliver important nutrients to cells while improving sleep quality.

Maintaining a balanced diet can provide you with the energy you need, boosting your mood and improving your ability to manage stress. All while reducing the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers.

Always keep a reusable bottle nearby to stay hydrated at home or on the go.

Drink a glass of water before every meal and incorporate more water-rich foods into your diet, like tomato, lettuce, celery, and watermelon.

Include a wide variety of foods like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, dairy, and whole grains, but don’t deprive yourself of a treat every now and then – it’s all about moderation!

Make Mindful Moments

As a mum, finding a spare moment feels easier said than done, especially with a million other things on your mind.

So, how can you add more mindful moments? Try to take small breaks throughout the day to give yourself a chance to relax and recharge. Go for a walk and take in the fresh air while admiring the beauty of nature.

Enjoy a cup of herbal tea, which is often packed with antioxidants, reducing inflammation and boosting your immune system.

Listening to music can also be a great stress reliever, boosting confidence while helping you relax.

Or do an activity that requires a high level of engagement, like gardening, drawing, cooking, or doing puzzles, eliminating clutter from the mind and focusing your attention elsewhere on something you enjoy.

Do Some Digital Detoxing

We all do it: Check our texts and emails when we wake up, scroll through

Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram throughout the day, and sit down to watch our favorite streaming services at night.

But while technology and social media keep us entertained and help us stay connected with family and friends, it also has a way of consuming us. Constantly comparing ourselves to others online might leave us feeling inadequate or with serious FOMO.

Like turning a computer off and on again, a digital detox can help you recharge and refresh, reducing stress, improving productivity, and restoring sleep, not to mention positively affecting your relationships.

How to detox from your digital devices:

  • Schedule time away from screens by setting a reminder on your phone to take a walk or eat lunch away from your desk.
  • Adjust your phone settings to limit time on certain apps, turn off notifications, or use an app to keep track of how much time you spend on social media, then set a goal to reduce it.
  • Keep phones away from the dinner table; instead, use the time to catch up on the day’s events and enjoy a delicious meal with your family.
  • Avoid bringing your phone or tablet to bed and stop texts and calls from coming through after hours by enabling the Do Not Disturb function, giving you a chance to wind down before going to sleep.

Create Your Morning Ritual

As all mums know, every morning is hectic: trying to balance breakfast with getting the kids out of bed, along with all the homework-checking, lunch-making, teeth-brushing, and everything else in between. And that’s while trying to get yourself ready!

But finding a little time for yourself in the morning can help alleviate some of that stress, making you feel a lot more grounded and less overwhelmed during the day while providing you with a better sense of control.

The quality of your morning reflects the rest of your day, so set the right tone by establishing a routine that aims to reduce anxiety, boost productivity, and brighten your mood:

  • Try waking up with yoga, meditation, or breathing exercises to harness patience and manage stress better.
  • Put pen to paper by journaling your thoughts and encouraging positive self-talk while identifying fears and concerns.
  • Before having your morning coffee, drink water from your reusable cup to relieve fatigue and remove toxins.
  • Whether taking a walk or doing a full body workout, exercise can also help clear the mind, preparing you for the day ahead.

Being a mum is one of the most challenging yet rewarding jobs you can do. It is a long journey, one full of ups and downs.

And that’s why self-care is so important. It can help strengthen the body and soothe the mind, making you feel empowered and more in control.

And by doing little things like meditating, exercising, eating healthy, and getting a good night’s sleep, you’ll make a big difference, not only to your own well-being but to your family’s, too.
