Redecorating Your House: How To Choose The Perfect Blinds For Each Room

Window blinds are a fantastic way to shade your home, improve privacy and even help boost your security, but with so many types of blinds out there, it can be hard to know where to start!

Obviously, everyone’s tastes and decor choices are different so feel free to mix it up, but every type of blind has pros and cons that make it ideal for certain tasks. Here’s a definitive list of the types of blinds suited to each room and why.

The Living Room

Your living room is perhaps the most versatile room in your house when it comes to blinds. Ideally, you’ll want something that gives you privacy but doesn’t block out all natural light. This also means you can diffuse any bright beams of sunlight from streaming through your windows and disturbing your telly viewing! Consider a roller blind with a dimout fabric or a Roman blind if you really want to make a statement.

The Kitchen

Your kitchen is subject to heat, moisture and mess and so you’ll need a blind that can keep pace. No doubt you’ve got a window above your sink, and so when things get steamy you don’t want anything to warp or start to become mouldy.

Faux wood venetian blinds are incredibly versatile and strong. Often made from a plastic composite, they won’t get damaged as you got creative in the kitchen plus – you can just wipe them clean.

The Bedroom

When sleep is a must (and privacy) a blackout blind is the way to go. The fabric prevents exterior light from entering, allowing you to sleep fitfully – or at least until the kids decide it’s time to wake up!

Choose either a blackout roller blind or Roman blind with a blackout lining. There are plenty of great patterns and colours to choose from out there, so you can easily match your blind to your interior.

The Conservatory

The conservatory or areas with large windows (like bifold doors from DotcomBlinds) really need shade but it can be hard to find blinds that suit the windows and function correctly. It is also quite important to be able to put up some form of blind because the sheer amount of sunlight entering the room will fade everything it touches, which will make your furniture look washed out and dull.

There are solutions, such as bifold door blinds from DotcomBlinds are held against the window-pane by sliding the end tabs under the rubber gasket of the window. This means fitting these blinds requires no drilling or mess and you can shade individual windows instead of an ‘all-or-nothing’ approach. These blinds are pleated and come with a blackout and thermal option, meaning you can use them to insulate your conservatory too.

Finally, when it comes to choosing the perfect blind for your room, be sure to order fabric or slat samples first so that you can see them material in person – that way you’ll absolutely know you’ve found your perfect window blind.
