Preparing Your Home for Retirement and Beyond

Preparing Your Home for Retirement and Beyond

If you’re approaching retirement, there are many plans you may be making to prepare for this next phase of life. While financial changes are important factors to consider, it’s also wise to think about your living situation. If you own your own home, now is the perfect time to make some necessary updates to prepare you for the changes that may occur as a senior adult. Here are three simple ways to update your home so that it still meets your needs for years to come.

Update Your Main Bathroom

The bathroom can be a difficult space to navigate with caution in your later years. In order to stay safe and comfortable as you groom and care for your body, you’ll likely need to make some updates and adjustments along the way. Consider a Bellavita Auto Bath Lift to make it easy to bathe without spending more to makeover your entire bath or shower. Install grab bars near the toilet and in the shower to avoid slips. An elevated toilet can make trips to the restroom less stressful on joints.

Create an Alternative Entrance to Your Home

If you have to walk up steps to get into your house, it’s wise to start planning for where you might install a ramp or lift in the future. While adding one to the front of the house may be the most common solution, you could just as easily create access via the back door or through an attached garage without affecting your home’s curb appeal. Research your options, and be sure to check for local laws and permits before you begin any work.

Rethink Your Home’s Layout Room by Room

Your 60’s are a great time to downsize. If you’ve been holding on to extra furniture or items that clutter your home, it may be time to refresh your layout. By clearing away things you don’t need, you’ll have more room to relax and maneuver throughout your house. In addition, you’ll cut back on cleaning time every week. It could also be beneficial to consider reassigning rooms based on your current and future needs. Move your master bedroom to a more convenient location and turn your office into an extra guest room for family and friends.

It’s wise to be proactive about the updates your home will need in the future. By planning ahead, you’ll be ready for life’s changes so you can enjoy living in your home longer.

Great tips Kelly, particularly the one regarding an additional entrance to the property!

Whilst concrete generally seems the most popular material for pathways, we'd recommend using asphalt for the any driveway ramps due to its durability to mould/shape to surrounding conditions, whilst being cheaper to repair with less maintenance and faster curing times so you don't need to wait weeks for it to be ready for use - perfect for the older generation who want a surface that takes care of itself.
