Heavy winds blow during tropical storms and hurricanes that disrupt the entire flow of our daily activities; the roads get blocked as there is dust everywhere, trees get uprooted, many power transmission poles also get uprooted, leading to power failure for hours, peddlers are unable to walk, drivers lose control of their vehicle.

People are unable to move as the entire transportation system gets interrupted.

Storms are usually accompanied by heavy rainfall for a long duration; this causes roof damage, water damage or other adverse effects.

Discuss with all your family members an evacuation plan so that you are prepared from beforehand if you have to leave your habitat.

Never keep a single plan; always have back-up strategies so that you don’t become helpless if the first option fails.

Refer to the report generated by the weather forecasting department so that you get a distinct picture of the areas subjected to risk.

2. Collect all the safety equipment

According to a report generated by The Department of Homeland Security, you must have:

  • Sufficient drinking water supply or stored water for one or two days.
  • A minimum of three to four days of non-perishable food items.
  • Battery for power back-up.
  • Flashlight, matchsticks, candles in case of power failure.
  • Whistle or speaker to inform others if you get stuck.
  • First aid kit with all the necessary medicines and health care requirements.
  • Power banks to charge mobile phones.
  • A map of your locality could be handmade.
  • Tapes to fix small damages.
  • Screwdriver, hammer and the basic to fix small damages.

Make sure that every person of your home knows the location of all these pieces of equipment.

3. Keep some cash handy and fill up your gas tank

If an emergency arises and you have to evacuate, you will not get the time or resources to encash money, so you must withdraw some cash for before-hand.

If you have a vehicle and you are willing to drive, it won’t be able to get the gas tank filled.

Although it is not advised to drive during storms, you must still get the resources.

4. Procure vital medicines

If you are on any regular medication for blood pressure, heart issues and so on, you must procure your medicines for a dosage of minimum ten to fifteen days before-hand.

Due to storm or post-storm for few days, the commercial activities are frozen, so you might be unable to get the medicines.

Get some generic medicines for cold, cough, and fever because these issues are common during a storm.

In case you have to evacuate, carry your medicines with you. Store the medicines in a cool and dry place.

5. Be aware of the severity of the storm.

The National Weather Service recommends that must surely you “know your zone.”

There are some zones that are on red alert, which means those areas are highly prone to risk.

There are specific guidelines issued for people who are living in these zones; if you are living in the red-alert zone, then please follow the instructions to ensure safety.
