Being a senior is not only about anticipating a graduation party and looking forward to being free from academic duties.
It’s also about being responsible, making plans for the future, and a lot more.
To graduate smoothly, you need to start thinking about many things as early as the first semester of your senior year.
If you already failed to do that, the second semester is your last chance to get things straight.
Use it to the fullest! We’ll tell you how.
Read on to find some 100% working tips on how to prepare yourself for graduation properly.

Study Hard
We go to school, college or uni to study.
If you had some other ideas, it’s high time to reconsider them and catch up on the curriculum.
You know, some students are so busy socializing at school that they reach their senior year without even knowing the types of essays!
Then, when the exam time comes, they turn to the internet and ask Google: “what is narrative essay”?
Don’t be like that. Learn everything you need to complete every single course successfully.
Turn in all your papers on time, and strive to get a good grade – why not?
Clear Out Your Academic Plans
Whether you’re a high school or an undergraduate student, one of your most important tasks during the last academic year at school is to determine what you’re going to do next.
Obviously, you don’t have too many choices. You can:
- Continue with higher education and earn a Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s degree, or a Ph.D.;
- Leave school for good, find a job, and embark on a professional journey;
- Take a gap year, find a job, and apply to college or university next year, or whenever you’re ready;
- Start a business – on your own or with a partner.
Whatever you choose, it’s important to understand your goals early in your senior year because your strategy for this year will depend largely on what you want to do after graduation.
Polish Your Resume
Even if you decide to continue your academic career, chances are that you’ll need some job, as life is not always easy for a student.
So, here comes the need to create an attractive CV that your potential employers will love.

To do that, you’ll need to use all your writing skills gained while crafting all those academic papers, plus conduct research to find out what a typical resume should look like this year.
Once you put together a decent resume, you’ll need to revise it every once in a while to update it and make any necessary corrections.
Set Up a LinkedIn Profile
LinkedIn remains the major professional online network and, therefore, can be quite useful to anyone looking for a good job.
But in order to be able to use it to a full extent, you need to build an appealing profile there first.
Your LinkedIn profile should contain all the relevant information about your education, skills, and professional experience.
Also, don’t forget to upload a relevant photo (a business photo, not a personal one!).
After that, start building up your network: add connections, follow relevant tags, read and publish articles.
Control Your Social Media Presence
Your senior year is also the time when you might need to think about your personal brand.
As it is formed mostly by what you post on social media, this is exactly where you need to start: clean up your social media accounts and archive or delete everything that doesn’t look “safe”.
This may look like an intrusion into your “personal” territory, but, like it or not, employers do often monitor social media accounts.
However, if you’re okay with that and are ready to wait for those employers who will take you as you are – go ahead and leave everything as it is.
But honestly, we wouldn’t recommend it.

Visit the Careers Center and the Financial Aid Office
If you still haven’t been to your school’s careers center, this year is your last chance to catch up on that task.
Whether you know what career you’re going to pursue – and especially if you don’t – counselors at the career center can provide you with valuable information and offer some guidance.
As for the financial aid office, visiting it is necessary in order to avoid any unpleasant surprises like having problems with obtaining your certificate or diploma.
It will also help you steer clear of any financial problems after you graduate.
Find an Internship
Whether or not you’re going to continue with your higher education, finding a good internship is always a great idea.
It’s somehow easier than finding a paid job. Still, it can provide you with much-needed work experience and help you make some useful connections in the business world.
Don’t feel bad about having to work without pay.
Sometimes it’s the best decision, as it’s quite probable that you’d land a better-paid job than you would if you skipped the internship.
Take Lots of Photos
While taking care of all the important issues listed above, don’t forget to have fun in-between.
After all, school years are often remembered by many as being the best in their whole life – so don’t miss all the fun!
Also, don’t forget to capture some moments on camera.
Make a proper photo session with your friends, lecturers, and professors at least once, and take beautiful pictures of yourself on campus.

Print them and store them safely. Later on, when you’ll feel nostalgic, you won’t have a hard time trying to find at least one decent photo to post on Instagram.
Afterword
Senior year is always a busy one, whether you’re going to pursue further formal education or start building a career as a professional.
So, don’t waste your time and take care of all the essential issues early on.
If you manage to do everything on time, you won’t have to worry about any unfinished business in the last weeks and days at school.
Instead, you’ll have time to relax and get prepared for that long-awaited graduation party!
