Otis Helps Children Grow Through Challenge

Change, conflict, and grief is an inevitable part of our world. As much as we want to keep it all away from our kids, it’s impossible. The best we can do is teach them to deal with it, and to find beauty in the world around them. Otis Grows is a new children’s book by Kathryn Hast, that seeks to help you do just that.

Otis Helps Children Grow Through Challenge

In this new children’s book, your kids will meet Otis. He’s a red onion that is questioning where he came from. You see, his mother is a yellow chicken from the Nuh-Uhs. His daddy is a blue flower that stems from the Yes-Chums. Searching for the answers he needs, Otis runs away. On his way he meets even more cultures and colors than he ever imagined.

Otis Grows is a book for kids that shows them the challenges of family conflict. It reinforces the lesson that while growing up can hard, love and wonder can prevail. This story will appeal to children and adults alike.

Blended Families

So many of us are blended families. While my “step” son is almost twenty-one and now a bit old for this book, I would have loved to have it when he was a younger. I love how it highlights how families have different sides, and it teaches children how to find the beauty in that. Instead, I used it to teach my younger son. Before I read it I told him to think of Otis as his Bubby, so he could relate the story on a more personal level. Because even though his brother is an adult, his mom’s side of the family is still part of our blended family.

Otis grows

Otis Grows is a great stepping stone to lead your children into bigger, life conversations. It’s also a great way to reinforce in them that even though at times it may not seem like it, there is still more good than bad in the world. In today’s world, that’s especially important.
