“MY MAGIC BREATH” – Children Can Benefit From Mindful Breathing

If you’ve ever utilized meditation and relaxation techniques, you’ve probably heard of (and possibly practiced) various breathing methods, as well.  Practicing certain breathing techniques can help with stress and is a useful relaxation tool for people of many ages, not just adults.  A new book, “MY MAGIC BREATH: Finding Calm Through Mindful Breathing” (Harper), is here to help. Through this book, the authors teach and walk children through the practice of mindful breathing. And, the book “reminds everyone that peace is only a single blow away” (from inside cover of the book).

The authors make the practice of mindful breathing fun, relaxing, and educational. They turn something like mindful breathing, which may be difficult for children to understand, into a simple, and hopefully helpful, practice that children can utilize to help themselves. The book also contains vibrant and colorful pictures, which help children better visualize what mindful breathing entails.

The book speaks to the reader in a format that encourages discussion and thought (perhaps with a teacher or a parent that reads the book with the child). For example, the book asks the reader, “What happened today that made you smile?” Or, “But sometimes things happen that make you feel sad or mad. Did something happen today that made you feel that way?” These are great questions to get children thinking about, and more aware of, how they feel.

This is a wonderful book that can help children learn the relaxation tool of mindful breathing. It’s also a great bedtime story for parent and child to read before bed to help unwind and prepare for sleep.

The book’s authors are Nick Ortner and Alison Taylor. Michelle Polizzi is the illustrator. Nick Ortner is a New York Times bestselling author of “The Tapping Solution.” Alison Taylor is an elementary school teacher and has used mindful breathing with her students.
