Moving Across The State? Here’s A Helpful Checklist On What To Do

Moving to a new state can be an exciting time in your life.

But it also means you have to deal with everything from getting utilities set up, finding a job, and making sure all of your prescriptions are transferred over.

To help make the transition as smooth as possible for you, we compiled this list of what steps need to be taken when moving across the state.

Moving Across The State? Here's A Helpful Checklist On What To Do

Pack

First thing’s first: get all of your belongings ready to go by packing anything and everything that can fit into a box.

We also recommend having some boxes on hand that is specifically designated for items like dishes, books, fragile items, clothes, etc.

You’ll thank us later when you’re not stressing over what needs to be packed and what doesn’t need to be.

Be more careful when carrying bigger and more fragile items because they can get damaged easily.

With that being said, don’t pack everything into one box because that will only increase the chances of breakage and other damage. Instead, try to spread out your things across multiple boxes so you’re reducing damage wherever possible.

If you happen to have some large items that you can’t take with you right now, consider to rent a storage unit until you’re ready to move them.

This will be especially helpful if you’re having more than one big item that you can’t take with you.

Consult

Before actually starting to pack, be sure to consult with everyone in your household who is also moving across state lines so they know what will be taken and what won’t.

Even if every member of your family is downsizing together, they might still have some items that were forgotten, so be sure to ask them what will happen with their stuff.

Communication is essential in every household, and this will be no different.

If you’re careful to consult with everyone beforehand, then they won’t feel like their items aren’t being taken into consideration when it comes time to pack them up.

Plan

When moving across the state, planning ahead is always best.

If you don’t already know where your destination will be, look into it and try to narrow down your preferences by things like location, job opportunities, how big of a home you want, etc.

Once you have some areas in mind, be sure to do some research on them so you know exactly what your new life will look like.

Don’t forget to look into the different utilities available at the place you’ll be living because they can play a big role in how comfortable you are living there.

Knowing what utilities are available to you can also allow you to plan ahead on when they will need to be switched over so you don’t have any issues with them.

Be sure to check out local laws and regulations so you know exactly what will be expected of you moving forward. This way, if there are some things that you’re not looking forward to complying with, you’ll know exactly what to expect and can plan accordingly.

Change Your Address

Once you’ve moved, the fine folks at the post office will not be able to deliver any mail that’s addressed to your old place.

That means it’s time for a change of address. How do you go about doing this? We recommend having all of your mail forwarded through USPS.

This will be free of charge and can come in handy, especially if you’re waiting on any important items like bills or other mail that needs to reach you.

As for what address you should use, go with the one where you’ll be living once everything’s settled.

This ensures the most efficient delivery of your mail without having to change it multiple times during the moving process.

Hire some help

To move across state lines, it’s always best to have some help.

Whether you hire movers to take care of everything for you or if you handle the relocation yourself, be sure to go through all of your options so you can choose what best fits your situation.

Think about how much time you have, how much effort it takes to pack up everything without help, what kind of gear is available to you, how big your new place will be, etc.

These are all important questions that need answers before deciding whether or not having some professional help is right for you.

Moving across state lines can be a daunting task, but if you plan ahead and take things one step at a time, it can be a lot less stressful.

We’ve provided some helpful tips on what to do before and during your move so that everything goes as smoothly as possible.

Be sure to consult with everyone in your household who is also moving so that everyone knows what will happen to their belongings.
