Life-Long Learning Tips for Adults

When you become an adult, learning is no longer forced on you. You need to try to learn something on your own accord. Adults, don’t be scared about life-long learning, it is a good thing. Here are some ways to keep your mind young and your brain learning continuously.

Keep on reading

One of my favorite ways to keep learning is reading. I love reading because you can literally read anywhere at any time. Reading can be done in many forms as well (magazines, books, websites, blogs, and so on). Reading books will benefit you in many ways. It provides insights into other people’s lives, learning from their failures and successes. And it’s an experience one should take every chance they get. The book doesn’t have to be fiction. It can be any book that can teach you something that you can apply in your own life. Reading books helps expand and enrich your mind. It can give you new perspectives on life and help you to grow as a person.

Play games to feed your brain

Your brain loves to continue to be challenged, so don’t be shy about it. Puzzles, computer games, and even phone games can help to feed your brain. I love a good puzzle to help challenge myself and my brain.

It’s possible to suffer from some sort of mental decline as we age. But you can stay mentally active by using brain training games. Brain training games have been a revolution on their own. Technology has allowed people to conveniently access brain games through programs like Brainable. Playing brains games feeds your brain and helps develop skills in a very fun way.

Take free classes

Whenever I can, I take free classes. Sometimes local colleges offer free classes and sometimes there’s an online course I will take. Classes are a great way to encourage life-long learning in your life. Even listening to a podcast can help you with your learning.

Practice what you’re learning

Don’t just let what you’re learning go to waste, put it to use. Have your friends challenge you by asking you questions about what you’re learning. Challenge yourself by writing a report on it or rehearsing what you have learned. Tutor someone else and help them learn. Teaching is a great way to encourage life-long learning.

Sign up for On Demand Learning

Some of us can never get enough learning in our lives, which is why On Demand Learning makes perfect sense. The Great Courses Plus is a GREAT way to encourage life-long learning in your own life. When you sign up, you get access to nearly 8,000 videos plus unlimited streaming. These videos are from The Great Courses.

I have watched a few courses and loved all of them. I love learning about everything, so I had no problem watching a few lectures. There are videos from the top professors at places like Ivy League and other great universities globally and experts from places like National Geographic, Smithsonian, and the Culinary Institute of America.

You won’t be disappointed in learning from these fabulous videos. Plus, it’s never-ending, so you can learn as much or as little as you want. Maybe you want to get better at math or be a better photographer—these courses are for you!

Takeaway

When you were a child, you developed skills such as walking and talking. As you grew older, you learned more skills, such as reading and driving. You may need to update what you know to keep up with the changing world as you get old. Learning something new, building your knowledge base, and expanding your worldview will push you to be better at your job, stay sharp, and make you a happy person. Your commitment to lifelong learning is an excellent way to boost your career and improve your life.

I like what this article recommends about practicing what you're learning. It makes sense that this would be helpful to ensure you don't forget little facts over time, etc. I also think schooling could be beneficial throughout your life because it'd keep your mind sharp while still learning fun and interesting things.

Glad you mentioned playing games! I love to play games but many people don't consider this learning, but it is so learning and it is a great mental stimulant as you have so clearly pointed out. Great article, thanks!

"Teaching is a great way to encourage life-long learning." True that! While earning something on the side too! That may sound a tad selfish, but college isn't exactly a freebie!

I definitely agree with the reading part! Not only is it a way to learn, it is also a great way to relax - for some. Not everyone appreciates the relaxing form of entertainment that books can provide.
