Is Ageism Real In The Workplace? 7 Ways to Know If Ageism Is Affecting You

Ageism in the workplace often isn’t talked about but can have a real effect on older worker’s financial and mental health. So how do you know if ageism is affecting you? In a recent survey, Resume Now polled 1,003 U.S.-based workers 40 and older for its 2024 State of Ageism in the Workplace Survey. According to the survey, 90% of respondents have experienced ageism in the workplace. Here are 7 real ways that ageism presents itself in the workplace.

1. You Earn Less Than Your Younger Colleagues

Many companies claim that they have wage transparency. But often, younger employees are making less than their older counterparts. 49% of Resume Now’s survey participants responded that they make less than younger employees. The only way to combat this is to be open about pay. Once you gather data, you can start conversations about your wages.

2. Your Manager Treats You Differently

Your manager treating you differently could be a sign of ageism in the workplace. This can take many forms. Maybe your manager unfairly disciplines you and not other younger employees. If your manager stereotypes you or harasses you, this is a more serious offense.

Age-related comments are never appropriate in the workplace. If you feel that inappropriate comments are being made, bring your concerns to HR. They can help mediate the situation. If you are comfortable, you can even call out the comment directly and politely.

4. You’re Excluded from Certain Activities

Many older employees feel isolated because they aren’t included in activities like certain meetings or group outings. This can lead to unhappiness at work and depression. You should openly discuss your concerns with your manager or HR and give specific examples of exclusion. Make sure to highlight your contributions to the team and approach the conversation in a professional manner.

5. You Don’t Get Challenging Assignments

Do you feel like you’re overlooked for more challenging assignments? You’re not alone. 22% of workers surveyed felt that they weren’t getting challenging assignments. If this behavior continues, address it directly with your manager. Make sure to ask directly for an assignment that interests you.

6. Your Employer Hires Many Younger Employees

52% of survey respondents said that their employer hires mainly younger employees. Often there are age biases in the hiring process. Some companies feel that younger workers are a better fit due to unfair stereotypes. These stereotypes include things like younger employees will adapt to technology or learn new skills more quickly.

7. You’ve Been Passed Over for Promotion

Have you been passed over for several promotions? Are younger less qualified employees getting these roles? This could be a clear sign of ageism in the workplace. If necessary, you can consult with an employment lawyer to file a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) protects against age-based discrimination in hiring practices.

Older workers report feeling anxious and depressed and have a lower self-worth. Many decide to or are forced to retire early. If ageism is present in your workplace, it’s important that you speak up and protect your well-being.
