Safety first

If you’re thinking about setting off fireworks in your backyard, the first thing to do is check your local regulations.

Laws vary from state to state, with most allowing the sale of consumer fireworks.

However, depending on where you live, there are different limits on the type and amount of fireworks you can buy. You can find a quick overview of state fireworks laws here.

Once you know what the law allows, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the safety rules.

When you’ve scoped out the ideal location for your show – a flat, hard surface well away from anything flammable – got your fire precautions in place, and made sure your kids and pets are protected, you can start planning your display.

Pick your fireworks

If you’re in a state where consumer fireworks are legal, buying them isn’t hard.

You can even find fireworks for sale online! But choosing the right ones will make all the difference.

The huge range of fireworks available to buy might seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.

If you’re a fireworks novice but you want a spectacular display, you might want to think about choosing a cake, or barrage.

These are pre-packed arrangements including different fireworks – usually a combination of aerial shells and Roman candles – with a single fuse.

Light the fuse, and the fireworks will do the rest!

If you want to keep things low-key, it’s a good idea to choose “Safe and Sane” fireworks that don’t fly or explode.

For example, a fountain is a ground-based firework that projects a shower of colorful sparks and stars over a large radius.

Because it doesn’t produce a loud noise, it’s a good choice if your neighborhood includes kids, pets, or people with PTSD.

Catherine wheels are another popular Safe and Sane firework.

When securely mounted, these spinning rockets produce amazing light and color displays with no startling bangs.

Snakes are a popular choice, too: these little tablets are made from chemicals that interact with fire to produce smoke and a long “snake” of ash.

While they’re not much on their own, they add plenty of atmospheres when combined with fountains, wheels, and good old-fashioned sparklers.

Throw a party!

Whether it’s cookies and hot cider, hotdogs and beer, or a lavish buffet, your guests will love the chance to eat, drink and enjoy the show.

Fireworks bring people together, so invite your friends, family, and neighbors to share the fun.

A backyard firework display can be a great way to mark a special occasion, whether it’s a birthday, wedding, anniversary, or graduation.

But the color and sparkle of fireworks make any night festive. With a few basic precautions, you can light up the sky!
