How To DIY Stainless Steel Countertops

Step 1: Research

If you do not mind doing most, if not all of the work yourself, you can save more than three times the cost!

Remodeling stores can charge around $120 – $150 per square foot, while sheet metal would cost $20 – $30 per square foot.

What’s more, you can also get additional help in installation with a little extra cost.

A little research would go a long way – check for quality fabricators or suppliers in your area and gather the necessary tools for the job.

Step 2: Templates

Now that you have decided to do it yourself, the first thing is to create a model for the counter.

Plywood works well and hardwood is even better.

Remove the sink and any additional fixtures before creating a dummy plywood counter.

It is pivotal that you that the measurements thus taken are accurate. Take this model to a metal fabrication shop to have it cut in accordance with your measurements.

Step 3: Installation

The next step is simply attaching the newly constructed template and the steel plating on it to the countertop.

Fix the sink back to the set-up, seal the corners and joints and you are good to go.

You can use liquid nails or screws on the base, put on the hardwood or plywood template, and further seal it with liquid nails before placing the steel model.

It is a good idea to clamp the edges, especially around the sink and let the entire thing set overnight.

Another way to get the sink attached is directly through the metal shop.

If done that way, a single sheet can take over the entire countertop, the sink seamlessly integrates with the countertop and it looks stunning.

Step 4: Consider Your Options

You can have the steel finish that further enhances the décor.

For instance, a polished finish, brushed or a hammered one – each has a unique charm.

Also, the base as Hardwood offers longer shelf life while plywood would save you some more money.
