Designing a kids bedroom in a way that is functional yet trendy can pose as a challenge for many people. But decorating a single room for two children can be an even harder task! After all, you need to make sure that this space is practical, organized and provides the comfort that both your children need.

While there are some wonderful kids room decorating ideas, you need to tailor them according to your room size, budget and personal preferences. No catalog room will be the ideal fit for your children. Each child has their own personal taste, preferences and needs that you should try incorporating in the room design.

For this reason, we have compiled a list of the top factors that you need to consider before you start designing a two children bedroom.

Choosing The Bed

Perhaps the single most important piece of furniture in any room is the bed. Since this one room will be accommodating two children, you need to be extra careful about your choice of bed and its placement.

If your room size allows it, opt for two single beds and place them at two different corners of the room to give the illusion of both your children having their own personal space. You can also put them parallel to each other with a night table dividing the space between the two beds. In case you want to further create two separate corners, choose loft beds and utilize the area underneath to place a desk and a storage box for their personal items. Or, pick bunk beds for your kids if you are low on room space.

In case you choose bunk beds, make sure it has a solid, sturdy structure that includes rails. Ideally, if you are saving space, go for a bunk bed that has drawers for storing personal stuff. Remember, you want to prioritize space for other pieces of furniture so you need to keep the room size into consideration before making any decisions!

Storage And Personal Space

One of the greatest concerns of any parent is trying to assemble and organize the many belongings of their children. Say goodbye to regularly scattered toys, books and other personal belongings by following our tried and tested methods.

You are definitely going to have your hands full with the clutter left behind by two children. So your best bet is to opt for separate storage units for both. Ideally, we suggest opting for a mix of open and closed storage space.

If you choose separate beds, you can place a beautiful storage ottoman at one end and mount floating shelves above the bed at the other. You can also arrange for the beds to have inbuilt storage, such as drawers, to avail the benefits of having multipurpose furniture. However, if you go with a bunk bed, try having a bottom drawer installed in it and use dividers to segregate and allot storage space for each child.

We also suggest modular furniture so that you can adapt to changing needs and requirements as your children grow up. Additionally, in order to liven up space, don’t limit your storage options to traditional choices. Go for a mix of separate opaque toy chests, wicker baskets, built-in separate shelves, and wall-mounted or freestanding cabinets. To make the room come alive, paint your shelves and add some color and fun!

We strongly suggest that you have individual desks for both children. Whether you decide to buy a desk, install a floating desk or choose an alcove, remember that this is a very important space for your child. Place their storage units under these desks and add shelves to store books.

Lastly, closet space is likely to emerge as an issue with children sharing a room. The ultimate solution is to get a chest of drawers and assign specific drawers for each kid. For hanging clothes, and any other items, use a closet divider and ideally have the closet built to be able to install separate drawers for closed storage and shelves for open storage.

Painting The Walls

Contrary to popular view, when you think of kids room paint colors, it is not important to opt for bright colors. In fact, it is wiser to select subtle, neutral tones in order to make the room look bigger and spacier.

First off, choose a paint that can have marks and spillage easily scrubbed off it. Go for something with a matt finish that can last longer. Secondly, our recommendation would be to keep the room in neutral tones, such as ivory or taupe, and complement it with a bright-colored wall to add character and warmth to the room. This is especially great if both your kids have varying preferences and can not reach a consensus, and it is a safe play when kids of different genders end up sharing the same space.

For the single bright colored wall, add a design pattern such as geometrics, a wallpaper of your kids’ choosing or murals if you want to get creative. We suggest leaving this wall free for both your children’s creativity to show itself. Maybe frame their drawings or paintings or hang up their posters to add a friendly and welcoming vibe to the room.

Flooring Options

The flooring in a kids room is going to determine the entire feel of the space. While there are plenty of children’s bedroom flooring options, your basic choice is going to be between a carpet or no carpet.

A carpet can be a comfortable choice for a children’s bedroom, with the advantage of cushioning trips and falls and insulating against noise. However, considering the room will have two children, there is going to be a lot of dirt retained in the carpet, with regular spillage and possible stains. The need for routine cleaning may wear you down and your carpet may need replacing after a short while.

This is why we strongly suggest for hard floorings, such as wood, vinyl, rubber or laminate. Get a superior quality hard flooring done once and you won’t need to change it for a very long time. This is because it will withstand regular wear and tear, will be easy to clean and maintain, and will give a luxurious and expensive look.

Hard flooring can also allow you to demarcate two individual spaces for your children using rugs and small carpets, while simultaneously adding a pop of color and pattern to the room. Allow your children to pick their own rugs to make them feel like space is theirs. Or, put some thought into it and complement the single bold colored wall with interesting rug pieces to allow harmony of colors and design.

Windows And Lighting

With regards to window treatment, you need to assess the entire room and its general theme before settling on a decision. You could go for the good old fashioned curtains for a touch of fabric in the room. Allow ceiling to floor drapes to enhance the look of the bedroom. However, considering two children are going to live in the room, expect regular cleaning of curtains to maintain them.

Your other option could be blinded in a solid color or a pattern in case your room is painted in neutral colors. Remember to buy child-safe blinds to avoid mishaps. Finally, you can also choose between different shutters. Some of them are hand-painted while some come in wood finishing. They are extremely functional and will block light most effectively compared to curtains or blinds.

For lighting, we suggest to spruce it up a bit rather than have your child rely on one single source of overhead lighting. For starters, get a cool night lamp so that your kids can have some source of light at night to avoid accidents in the dark. Secondly, get individual desk lamps of their choosing to add individuality to their personal space. If your child has a habit of bedside reading, we strongly suggest investing in a bedside reading lamp.

Wrapping Up

We hope that the above helps you to look forward to designing and decorating a functional room for your two children. Always remember to merge their unique choices for different objects with a more practical approach to get the best of both worlds.
