Loneliness doesn’t have to hold you back when you live alone. Discover ways to overcome social isolation with our fun and helpful tips [7 included!]

How To Deal With Loneliness When Living Alone

Living alone has serious perks. One benefit is leaving dirty laundry on the floor without someone yelling at you to pick it up. And if you decide to stay up all night, you don’t have to worry about turning off the lights so a roommate can sleep!

But even though there are benefits, there’s still the issue of loneliness. You may love living on your own, but everyone experiences loneliness from time to time.

When you start feeling lonely, please don’t feel bad about it. It’s only natural to feel this way sometimes when you’re living by yourself.

But when loneliness hits, enjoying some activities and techniques will boost your spirits. Here are our top seven ways to deal with loneliness better.

1. Sing a Song

It might seem silly, but singing is a great way to turn a blah day into a happy day.

Select a few of your favorite songs to play and learn the lyrics so you can sing along.

Pay for music through a streaming service and create a playlist with uplifting songs! Being prepared for when you get into a funk can help treat it before it gets any worse.

As long as you don’t annoy the neighbors, turn up some tunes from your playlist and sing away. Soon the loneliness will fade away!

2. Take Up Painting

Sometimes painting can help you relax when you’re feeling lonely.

Painting teaches you how to focus and enjoy the experience.

There are different painting styles, such as acrylic and watercolor. Do some research and figure out which one you’d like to try first.

Acrylic paint is suitable for beginners since it’s easy to use, and you don’t need a lot of materials to get started. But, acrylic paint dries fast, so you have to work quickly!

Painting is a fun hobby that many people enjoy. Try it, and you may find you’re more relaxed and less lonely.

Even if you don’t think painting is for you, you’ll never know until you try.

3. Keep Busy With Different Apartment Projects

A great way to combat loneliness is by staying busy doing various projects in your apartment.

Make a list of jobs you’ve wanted to get done, such as rearranging your furniture in the living room.

Refurbishing an old piece of furniture is an example of a fun and relaxing activity to do.

You can also work on home organization projects. Sorting through paperwork that you’ve been putting off for far too long should help clear up the clutter!

And, even if it’s not an exciting activity, you can clean more frequently. Get ahead on cleaning, and you won’t have to take as long next time!

4. Get a Pet

Getting a pet, such as a dog, is a fantastic way to have companionship and comfort.

First, it’s essential to check with your apartment about pets. Find out if they allow dogs and whether there are any breed restrictions.

If you can move forward to get a pet, do some research on which breeds are low-maintenance. Some dogs, such as a Brussels Griffon and Dachshund, are easier to care for than other breeds.

Once you get a furry friend, you’ll be wishing you had gotten one sooner!

On those lonely days, you’ll love spending time with your dog. [1]

Her personality will win you over, and you’ll be eager to find activities for you both to enjoy.

There’s no doubt about it: dogs are man’s best friend. Allow your pet to become your best friend, and she’ll help you cope with loneliness.

You and your dog can also go on adventures such as hiking and walking near your apartment!

5. Make Plans With a Friend

If you’re feeling lonely, having some plans to look forward to can make a world of difference.

That way, when you start to feel alone, you can remember the plans that you have lined up!

Call a friend or family member and plan out when you can see them. If a friend is eager to exercise more regularly, you could offer to go walking with them weekly.

Having activities lined up should help prevent loneliness from creeping in. You’re also more likely to stay positive.

Make some plans to watch a movie or go on an adventure to keep your spirits up. You’ll be glad you made a point to reach out to a friend or loved one to make plans!

6. Be Kind to Yourself

As we mentioned at the beginning, it’s okay to experience loneliness.

But instead of being hard on yourself for feeling the way you do, practice self-kindness.

Never compare yourself to someone else who lives alone and acts like they have it all together. Even if they don’t admit it, other people who live alone get lonely sometimes, too.

The next time you’re having a hard time being on your own, focus on loving yourself. Living alone is an excellent opportunity to learn how to be okay with silence.

If the silence becomes too deafening, it’s only natural you’re feeling this way. Cut yourself some slack and practice self-care.

Examples of self-care are:

  • Taking a bubble bath
  • Journaling
  • Taking a nap
  • Cuddling with a pet

Take care of yourself, and you’ll no doubt feel a lot better.

7. Find a New TV Show to Watch

Now, we don’t recommend becoming a couch potato, but you have to admit watching TV is a great way to distract yourself.

If there’s a TV show you’ve meant to watch, hop on Hulu or Netflix. There is an endless amount of shows that you can watch!

Ask a friend what shows they recommend watching so that you can watch one you know you’ll like.

As long as you take breaks, there’s no harm in being entertained with a new favorite show.

Invite some friends over who love the same show. It’s the perfect solution to loneliness. And much better than wrestling with your thoughts during a lonely time.

In Conclusion

Being lonely is something that everyone experiences, but that doesn’t make it any less easy to go through.

You can tell yourself not to feel a certain way, but you’ll go through a challenging time sooner or later. Everyone does.

But instead of allowing loneliness to get worse, have some ideas on what to do. You don’t want to get so blue that you experience depression, which in some cases happens.

By having a list of activities and techniques, you’ll be able to slay the loneliness monster.

In time, you’ll love living by yourself and know how to deal with feeling alone.
