Engaged? Here Are 5 Questions To Ask Your Partner Before Marriage

Finding someone you feel like you can spend the rest of your life with is a truly blissful feeling.

However, you need to make a well-informed decision before planting a ring on your significant other.

It’s easy to dream about marriage while everything is good and you’re still in the puppy love stage.

The problem is, once the puppy love stage fazes out, things get real.

If you and your partner aren’t on the same page about major issues, it could lead to trouble in paradise.

Engaged? Here Are 5 Questions To Ask Your Partner Before Marriage

Fortunately, there are several questions to ask your partner before marriage that can help you avoid committing to someone with whom you might have a rocky future.

Keep reading for the top five things to discuss before taking your vows.

1. Do You Want Kids?

Being a parent is one of the most important topics to discuss before getting married.

Few people have an indifferent opinion when it comes to having kids.

People either really want children, or prefer to avoid being a parent at all costs.

Make sure you and your partner are on the same page about parenting before getting married.

If you both want kids, you can discuss how to parent when the time comes.

2. Where Do You See Us in 5 to 10 Years?

If you’re wondering, “What should couples talk about before getting married?” start with the future.

In order to thrive as a couple, each of you must have an equal say in your life.

For example, where do you see yourself in the next 5 to 10 years? What about your partner?

If you’re planning on sticking with your career and staying put until you retire, but they want to move to a new location as soon as you get married, it might create some issues.

3. Do You Want to Travel or Establish Strong Roots?

One of the most important questions to ask your partner before marriage is about their life goals.

What does their dream life look like?

For example, if your ultimate goal is to travel as much as possible and they hate traveling, you might not be a good match.

If you work your whole life so you can retire and travel, being married to someone who wants firm roots could have negative consequences.

4. Should We Sign a Prenuptial Agreement?

Next, though it’s a difficult topic to bring up, one of the most important questions to ask before marriage is whether or not you should sign a prenuptial agreement.

Often referred to as a prenup, a prenuptial agreement is a legal document that serves to keep certain assets and/or debts separate from one another.

For example, a prenup might serve to keep a family business under that family’s name in the event of divorce.

It might also serve to protect a surviving spouse from the other person’s debt in the event that they die.

5. What Are Your Spiritual and Political Beliefs

Finally, consider the current societal climate.

Important questions to ask your partner before marriage might be about their political and spiritual beliefs.

We tend to define ourselves based on our beliefs.

Having a partner with different beliefs might create a foundation of uncertainty, animosity, and resentment.

Do You Have Questions to Ask Your Partner Before Marriage?

If you have questions to ask your partner before marriage, we recommend doing it before you get engaged.

If it’s too late for that, set aside time to sit down and have a serious conversation.

Too many marriages end in divorce as it is, you might be able to avoid disaster by talking about these topics beforehand.
