DIY Tips to Keep Your House Free from Odors and Smelling Fresh as a Daisy

There is nothing worse than walking into your home, or anyone else’s for that matter, and being assaulted with foul-smelling odors. Everything from pets to cigarette smoke and deep-fried foods that got more than a little overdone can send you reeling. If you are thinking of making it a major thrust of spring cleaning this year to rid your home of all those built up odors caused by months of being shut in away from arctic cold temperatures, it’s time to start looking at some DIY tips.

DIY Tips to Keep Your House Free from Odors and Smelling Fresh as a Daisy

Cigarette Smoke Is the Worst of All

If you have one or more smokers in your household, perhaps you can suggest they go outdoors to light up! However, before even attempting to clean and get rid of all those odors, you need to do something to prevent the problem in the future. Why not suggest (or buy!) a vaping device with pleasant smelling vape juice for use in the home? Not only will you be reducing the smell and preventing future work for yourself, but you just might find that they like vaping better than smoking anyway. It’s worth a try, isn’t it?

Don’t Leave Shoes in Common Areas

This is an especially useful tip for those families that have athletes in the home. Foul smelling shoes can quickly penetrate entire rooms and so you may want to either place a shoe rack on a covered porch or demand they leave their shoes in the garage or their own bedrooms. What an awful smell to walk into!

Pet Odors Easily Remedied

No matter how many types of room deodorizers you use, it’s sometimes next to impossible to get that lingering smell out of the air. One suggestion is to use, believe it or not, a Massengill Douche product. According to Linda Cobb, you only need to put a little petroleum jelly on the nozzle so that it doesn’t spray out too quickly. The product works on protein-based odors, so by rubbing a bit onto your dog or cat’s fur, you can help reduce the odors they naturally emit.

Reducing Hidden Kitchen Odors That You Can’t Find the Source Of

Everyone knows that sometimes it’s almost impossible to keep your walls and appliances smelling clean if you do a lot of spicy or greasy cooking. That’s why we continually wash down our appliances and backsplashes, but sometimes those odors linger. Did you know that smells can come from your garbage disposal if you don’t keep it clean? While you should try to avoid putting onions or garlic down the disposal, sometimes it’s unavoidable. Instead, periodically clean your disposal with ice and Borax or baking soda. You’d be amazed at how quickly those smells vanish!

There are so many ways of masking the smell but what you are trying to accomplish is something else altogether. Why assault the nose with fragrance on top of foul-smelling odors when you can simply work to eliminate or reduce the source? Nobody enjoys spring cleaning, so make sure you use these tips and next year, hopefully, your job will be that much easier.
