How to be More Comfortable on a Long Flight

Does your job require you to frequently fly across the country? Is the thought of your next business trip causing you a headache? Dry air, cramped seats, and cabins with fickle temperatures are some of the things that most flyers have to deal with every time they fly.

People who have been flying for quite a while have grown accustomed to these discomforts and found ways to cope. Take their advice and use some of these tips that will make your next flight more comfortable:

Drink Up

You need to drink as much water as possible because flying will dehydrate you. You can either drink before the flight or during the flight.

Make sure to drink a lot of water while you are waiting at the departure gate. Most airports have filtered water fountains where you can refill your bottle. While on the plane, you can also ask for water. In most cases, you will get one without asking.

Reserve a Good Seat

Even within the same class, you will find that some seats are superior to others. It also depends on your needs as well. If you want to sleep, look for a window seat or if you want more legroom, ask for an exit row/aisle seat. If you have a child with you, steer clear from an exit row seat.

Make sure to avoid seats near toilets whenever possible because other passengers will be passing by all the time either preventing you from sleeping or asking you to move your legs so they can pass. Moreover, the light and the noise that escapes through the door could also cause you distress.

Take Your Own Entertainment

In most cases, movies on planes do not start immediately. Additionally, the movie or music selection might not suit your tastes, meaning you will be bored the entire flight with nothing to do but twiddle your thumbs.

To prevent boredom, download the latest movies and songs onto your iPod. If you prefer to read, use earmuffs to block out the noise as you enjoy your book.

Minimize Carry-on Luggage

Carrying one backpack is enough when going on a plane. Moreover, fewer pieces of luggage mean you will be able to find space in the overhead bin. You can also store your bag underneath your seat. Plus, it will be easier to move around if you carry only one bag.

Fly with a Full Stomach

On some airlines, the food is quite bad and you will not like it. To avoid starving until you have arrived at your destination, make sure you eat beforehand. But first, check airline meals. Who knows, maybe it is something you will genuinely enjoy.

Move Around

This is especially important if you are going on a long flight. Moving around will help blood to circulate and keep the pain at bay. If you feel your legs are going to cramp up, get up and walk up and down the aisle a few times. Some airlines will offer in-seat exercise guidance which you can do whenever you feel like it.

Protect Yourself from the Dry Air

As mentioned earlier, the air on planes is very dry and it might dehydrate you. Aside from preparing yourself by drinking water, you can use eye drops when your eyes feel dry. If your nostrils feel uncomfortable due to the dry air, use a nasal gel to keep them moist. You also need to carry a lip balm to protect your lips from dryness. If your skin dries up easily, you should carry a bottle of moisturizer.

Do not Look at the Time

If you keep looking at the time, the flight will seem a lot longer. Just keep yourself entertained or use that time to catch up on your sleep. The flight will be over soon.
