Colors Are Not Gender Specific

Boys and Girls Can Like Any Colors – There Are No Rules

Book – Pink is for Boys by Robb Pearlman

I never realized how much we teach our kids (silently or otherwise) that certain colors are gender specific.  I have a granddaughter that recently showed me we must be doing it too.  Her uncle happens to like the color pink, and she thought that was so strange.  Of course, we sat down with her and had a conversation about it right then.  This is why I couldn’t wait to get the book “Pink is for Boys” by Robb Pearlman.  It explains that both boys and girls can like ANY color.  There is nothing wrong with a boy liking a pink bow or a girl in a blue baseball uniform.  I love the concept of the book for sure.

The book is supposed to be for ages 4 through 8, however, in my opinion, I think it would be better suited for younger kids.  My granddaughter is 5 years old and she was able to read it with no problem.  If your child knows their colors, they can follow along easily.  They will enjoy the brightly colored pages and wonderful illustrations.  Another great thing about it is there are not very many pages to read, so you won’t have to worry about boredom.

This book is a great conversation starter with your child.  After reading it with them, sit down and talk about it.  Let them ask any questions they may have.  Try to answer honestly, according to their ages.  I do this with movies, and it works great with books too.  Sometimes we think that they understand what we have read to them, but you won’t know unless you talk about it.  Maybe if you have older children you can go into more detail.  When my kids were young we had many conversations about “gender rules”.  To be honest, I don’t believe in many of them.  I think you should be comfortable with yourself no matter what the “rules” say.

So let’s teach our children to love everyone, even people that we think of as different.  Let’s show them a world where it is ok for a girl to have short hair, and a boy to have long hair.  Let’s teach them that pink is for boys!
