8 Discontinued Fast-Food Items from the 90s We Still Crave

Here today. Gone tomorrow. This is what happened to some menu items from the 90s. Have you ever wondered what happened to some of the favorite fast-food items we used to crave? Now would be a good time to reminisce on some fast-food innovations that once graced the menus of our favorite fast-food restaurants.

1. McDonald’s Arch Deluxe

Remember the Arch Deluxe? It was the burger with the quarter-pound beef patty on a bakery-style roll, topped with peppered bacon, lettuce, cheese, onions, and let’s not forget the secret mustard and mayonnaise sauce. I bet your mouth is watering right now just thinking about it! Sadly, the burger did not appeal to consumers. Maybe the higher price point or the appeal to adult tastes (and not the usual family-friendly menu) contributed to its downfall. Despite its massive $100 million marketing campaign in 1996, the Arch Deluxe was discontinued.

2. Taco Bell’s Chili Cheese Burrito

People are still tracking the appearance of Taco Bell’s Chili Cheese Burrito which was discontinued in the early 2000s. Fans today have reported sightings at select Taco Bell locations, even spawning websites dedicated to tracking its elusive appearances! I guess devotees miss the no-frills burrito, with beef chili and melted cheddar cheese, fashioned inside a soft flour tortilla. Yum! Bring back the Chilito!

3. Pizza Hut’s Priazzo

Where is the Priazzo? Pizza Hut introduced us to the Chicago-style deep-dish pizza in the 1980s, but by the early 90s, the Priazzo had disappeared. This pizza was like no other! It featured two layers of crust stuffed with cheese, meat, and vegetables, topped with sauce and more cheese. This pizza was carefully crafted, so preparation and the longer cooking time did not work out for the fast-paced environment of Pizza Hut restaurants. We wish this fan favorite could have stayed on the Pizza Hut menu a little while longer. Shucks!

4. Burger King’s Cini-Minis

In the late 90s, Burger King introduced us to Cini-Minis. The sweet, portable pastries were added to the breakfast menu and instantly became a crowd-pleaser. The pack of four bite-sized cinnamon rolls came with a side of icing for dipping or drizzling. Cini-Minis were a favorite menu item because they were not only delicious but could be eaten in the morning for breakfast or in the afternoon for a snack. Burger King brings back the bite-sized treats for limited-time promotions, but that seems a bit unfair to devotees who wish the Cini-Minis were still offered on the menu every day.

5. Wendy’s Stuffed Pita Sandwiches

When we think of Wendy’s, burgers, fries, and chicken comes to mind. But do you remember the Stuffed Pita Sandwich? In the late 90s, Wendy’s introduced us to its new menu item: crisp vegetables, flavorful sauces, and a choice of protein wrapped in soft pita bread. You could get different varieties of the pita sandwich, like Classic Greek, Garden Veggie, and Chicken Caesar. The Stuffed Pita Sandwich was new and unique, but it was phased out in the early 2000s as Wendy’s refocused on core menu items.

6. KFC’s Popcorn Chicken

There is nothing like the “original” KFC Popcorn Chicken! We must say original because KFC has placed popcorn chicken on its menu, but none of the recent versions compare to its original 90s version. We could never forget the bite-sized pieces of fried chicken that were perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. This innovative fast-food item holds a special place in fans’ hearts! Bring back the original Popcorn Chicken recipe, KFC!

7. Sonic’s Pickle-O’s

In the 90s, Sonic Drive-In’s Pickle-O’s was a hit! The unique side dish gained a loyal following, and then it disappeared. While Sonic has occasionally reintroduced Pickle-O’s as a limited-time offer, their absence from the regular menu continues to disappoint fans who crave this distinctive snack. Pickle-O’s were served hot with a side of ranch dressing for dipping. Consumers miss the crispy, battered, and deep-fried dill pickle slices that left them craving for more. Fans miss the option of having something else to order than traditional fries and onion rings. The popular snack is surely missed!

8. Pizza Hut’s P’Zone

I know we talked about pizza from Pizza Hut already, but we would be remiss if we did not include the P’Zone. P’Zone, a calzone-pizza hybrid, was introduced in 2002. Pizza Hut’s P’Zone was amazing because it offered a mess-free way to enjoy pizza, making it a popular choice for on-the-go meals. This innovative menu item featured pizza toppings and cheese enclosed in a folded pizza crust, served with a side of marinara. Pizza Hut has brought back the P’Zone occasionally, but limited-time offers do not satisfy fans who crave this pizza and desire to have it back on the menu permanently!

Did you have a good time reminiscing over the fast-food items from the 90s? It seems a bit unfair that these food innovations were removed from our favorite fast-food menus. Maybe, just maybe they will be restored. In the meantime, we will hold onto the memories and dream about our favorite foods from the 90s.
