7 Unforgettable One-Hit Wonders That Still Get Stuck in Your Head

Some tunes only need one chance to make a lasting impression. Many one-hit wonders topped the chart at some point, but their creators never went on to make another. Despite that, they’ve left their mark on pop culture forever. There is no shortage of one-hit wonders out there, but none will get stuck in your head like these seven.

1. “Take On Me” by A-ha (1985)

A-ha’s “Take On Me” is an 80s anthem. When it first made its way to the charts in 1985, the quirky video and upbeat tempo got everybody hooked. Even though this song was wildly successful, A-ha never managed to gain the same traction with any of their other songs. To this day, it remains a staple in a nostalgic 80s playlist and you’ll find yourself humming the tune all day once you listen to it.

2. “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice (1990)

Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby” is probably one of the most famous one-hit wonders. This song took a sample from Queen and David Bowie’s “Under Pressure” and put a rap melody to it. When it debuted in 1990, it was an instant hit and it made Vanilla Ice a cultural phenomenon. Unfortunately, his time in the spotlight was brief. He’s made several attempts at a comeback, but he only gets cameos in movies where he’s the punchline these days. However, there’s no doubt that when this song comes on, everybody will start singing along.

3. “Macarena” by Los Del Rio (1995)

The “Macarena” took the world by storm in the 90s. It became a party anthem and it was played at nearly every event for a decade or more. The dance moves were easy to follow and the song’s repetitive nature made it a favorite. To this day, you probably can’t go to a wedding or party with a DJ where the “Macarena” doesn’t get played. If you hear it, you’ll be drumming out the tune for the rest of the day.

4. “Who Let the Dogs Out” by Baha Men (2000)

This turn-of-the-century song was a strange one, but it’ll get stuck in your noggin nonetheless. “Who Let the Dogs Out” by Baha Men became the soundtrack for sporting events and parties all over the world. The hook was catchy, although it didn’t make much sense. It became a guilty pleasure for many people. The Baha Men didn’t go on to make another song that had the same appeal though. Either way, it’s nearly impossible not to hear “Who Let the Dogs Out” without barking along.

5. “Mambo No. 5” by Lou Bega (1999)

“Mambo No. 5” took over the radio stations in the late 90s. It had a jazzy beat and was humorous. Overall, it aimed to be a modern twist on the mambo genre. What Lou Bega probably didn’t bet on is that it became a global sensation. He never found the same kind of success with any of his other music though. But that doesn’t really matter because “Mambo No. 5” has withstood the test of time and if it comes on today, it’ll be sure to be stuck in your head.

6. “Tainted Love” by Soft Cell (1981)

“Tainted Love” was first recorded in the 60s, but Soft Cell’s version of the tune became a huge hit in the 1980s. While Soft Cell had an alternative appeal that was all the rage in the 80s, they never put out another hit that excelled like this one in the U.S. “Tainted Love” became synonymous with heartbreak and angst, making it a go-to track for expressing romantic turmoil. You’ll have a hard time not singing along.

7. “Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba (1997)

Chumbawamba’s “Tubthumping” had everyone singing along with its defiant, feel-good chorus, “I get knocked down, but I get up again!” You’d be hard-pressed not to hear it played in a bar or sports arena in the late 90s and early 2000s. Chumbawamba wasn’t able to achieve another hit though. But this song is a one-hit wonder that lives on.
