7 Tips on Styling Your Room for Better Sleep

Your bedroom is your sanctuary, a place to rest your head after a long day of dealing with Janice’s antics at the office. It’s where you begin and ends each day so you want to ensure it’s designed to support your total relaxation. So here are 7 style tips for turning any bedroom into a slumber oasis.

7 Tips on Styling Your Room for Better Sleep
  1. Keep it Clean

Clutter’s a part of life – laundry piles up and mail stacks higher.  It’s ok to let some things sit around the house but try to keep it out of the bedroom. Dr. Emerson Wickwire, assistant professor of psychiatry and medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine says “Physical clutter causes mental clutter, which activates the brain and negatively impacts sleep.”

Clearing piles of dirty clothes is a great start, but you can do more. Jonathan Prichard of Mattress Insider says you should also avoid having fitness equipment or office furniture in your bedroom. Who wants to think about the gym or work while drifting off to sleep?

  1. Calm Down on the Color

Like the clutter on your shelves, busy patterns and bright colors excite the mind and keep you awake. Grays, blues, and even subtle browns can be very relaxing.

If you just can’t part with that tangerine that speaks to your soul, find a rug with your fave color mixed with subtle tones. You can also add some natural color by keeping some houseplants around. Pro tip: potted succulents are easy to care for.

  1. Stash the Screens

I know this one seems impossible but lying in bed and scrolling through Instagram is keeping you up at night in more ways than you think. Not only are you glued to Kylie Jenner’s story, but studies show your phone emits a blue light that stops the body from releasing the melatonin needed to get to sleep.

Consider purchasing an alarm clock (remember those?) and leave your phone in another room at night. You can use that reclaimed time to prep for sleep by reading, journaling, or meditating.

In fact, you may want to consider removing all screens from your bedroom – yes, even the TV. Watching TV before bed can actually disrupt your sleep cycle. If you absolutely need to watch some Office reruns before bed, try going without a few times a week and you might find yourself sleeping better.

  1. Create a Tidy Bedside Table

When it comes to bedside tables, keep it simple. (Remember the whole clutter is bad thing?) Bedside tables are meant to be practical – put away the knick-knacks. You don’t want to knock over that porcelain kitten in the middle of the night.

Recommended items:

  • A book for nighttime reading
  • An alarm clock
  • A journal to write down those thoughts that are keeping you from falling asleep
  • Ear plugs or a white noise machine
  • A lamp
  1. Find the Right Mattress

Picking out a mattress is more than going to lay down on a few at the store down the street. There are a number of factors to consider from firmness,

cost, durability, and even the way you sleep. According to Rest Right Mattress you should as the following questions: Is your mattress right for your side-sleeping tendencies? Does it support you need to stay cool? This can feel overwhelming, but with this guide you’ll have everything you need to land on the right mattress.

  1. Cool Off

Who doesn’t love being warm and cozy in a comforter burrito? While you may want to be toasty at night, studies show that the optimal temperature for sleep is actually quite cool. You want your core body temperature to fall to get your best sleep. Set your AC between 60 and 68 degrees.

Now I’m sure you’re hearing your husband or dad yelling, “Don’t touch that thermostat! I’m not made of money!” That’s fine. If cranking down the AC isn’t an option, consider investing in a tower or box fan to keep on through the night.

  1. Nix the Noise

That fan can also help provide some soothing background noise to block out midnight distractions. White noise machines and apps can also create a calming ambiance to get you through the night. Just remember, if you end up using an app for your white noise, silence your notifications to keep your sleep free of interruptions.

Now you can sleep easy at night knowing your room is helping you get your best sleep possible!
