The fish that lays the eggs used to reside in the Caspian Sea, but they’re pretty close to extinction in their native environment.

Truffles are expensive as they are, but white truffles are even more pricey. White truffles are rare that are found in Italy and Croatia and must grow in very particular conditions. Besides that, they also require specific methods to collect and preserve them. They are revered for their exquisite aroma and taste and cost around $2100 in Europe.

Saffron is not only the world’s most expensive spice, but it is pound for pound, more expensive than gold itself, mainly because it is a labor-intensive crop. Like the white truffles, saffron requires special growing conditions. They are grown for only seven days a year in autumn. This succulent spice costs more than $500 an ounce.

Rest assured, this is an actual delicacy from the Chinese folk made specifically from a swallow’s nest. Their nest is made almost completely out of saliva (which at this point, isn’t really pulling you towards this dish any further) without any foreign object.

The high price attached to this dish is because it’s really dangerous to collect the nests. Swallows typically build their nests on cliffs and getting them is indeed a challenge where you could risk falling off the cliffs. The dish costs around $3000 per kilogram.

The number of these rare Japanese-native Matsutake mushrooms have declined in the past due to invasive trees and insects that have populated in shaded areas where these mushrooms grow. Delicious as they are, there may come a day where we may not be able to taste them anymore. Their rarity plays into their steep prices and can cost you around $600 per kilogram.

6.   Moose Cheese

This rare, expensive cheese can only be found at the Moose House Farm in Sweden and prepared with the milk of Haelga, Juno and Gullan. With over 5 liters of milk produced by each moose daily, even between May and September, the farm is able to sell as much as 300 kilograms of cheese annually. Moose cheese costs about $1074 per kilogram.

7.   Japanese Wagyu Steaks

The Japanese Wagyu steaks are made from Japanese beef and are said to be one of the tastiest in the world. In order to get the beef, purebred Wagyu bull-calves must be given massages and listen to classical music. When the steaks are extracted, they give out a distinguishing aroma, a renowned buttery texture, and great marbling. The steaks can cost around $450 per kilogram.
