After a long winter in the Midwest, I look forward to spring cleaning. I have pets and a small child, which is the reason I look for natural ingredients when choosing cleaning products. I think others are looking for natural products too, because there seems to be a greater variety in the stores. If you can though, it’s best to make your own. There are 4 ingredients that I have in my pantry at all times, because they are great for making your own cleaning products. Here are my go to’s and what I use them for:

Lemons

The scent of lemons is used in many commercial cleaning products and I tend to choose products that have a citrus scent to them.

~lemon juice can be used in a great all purpose cleaning mix:

1 part water

1 part vinegar

squeeze lemon juice to mask the vinegar smell

Add to an empty spray bottle to clean countertops, sinks and other surfaces

~ lemon has antiseptic and antibacterial properties, so it’s great for cleaning cutting boards and counters

~ place cut lemons in your garbage disposal and it will get rid of any unpleasant odors

Distilled White Vinegar

~ vinegar helps to remove water stains and mildew in bathrooms

~ pour 3/4 of vinegar in toilet bowl and let sit for a few minutes and then use a brush to remove stains

~ place a bowl of vinegar (or mix with water) in the microwave and as the liquid boils it helps to loosen food particles inside the microwave

Baking Soda

~baking soda can be added to any natural cleaning mixes for a bleaching effect

~ baking soda is great to eliminate odors if placed in the refrigerator or pantry

~you can sprinkle baking soda on upholstered furniture and vacuum after a few minutes to remove odors

~remove floor and wall scuff marks with a baking soda paste (equal parts of baking soda and water)

Salt

~ salt is an abrasive and can be used in cleaning mixes to help remove tough stains or food from pots and pans

Eliza wrote a great post about Spring Cleaning in 5 Steps  and now you can add natural ingredients to the routine she suggested.
