3 Events In Life That Cause Stress, And How To Handle Them

We often hear people say that stress is a killer, and unfortunately, there is some truth to the phrase. Stress does cause physical strain, as well as mental and emotional strain.

Before you even register that you are mentally stressed, you may feel some of the more common physical symptoms of stress.

This may include muscle tension, especially around the neck and shoulders, as well as headaches and fatigue.

Over time, the physical issues associated with mental stress tend to mount. Lots of people deal with stress through disordered eating, either in under-eating or over-eating, both of which are unhealthy and can result in bone issues as well as problems with the hair and skin.

Many people actually suffer from skin and hair issues linked to stress either way, with blemishes and rashes being associated with stress, as well as hair loss.

Some even find themselves ultimately experiencing breathing and heart issues linked to stress, with stress sometimes being considered a contributing factor to heart attacks.

People may also find that their stress manifests in an inability to sleep properly, which can cause them to have issues when operating machinery or driving, sometimes leading to a serious injury.

It’s clear that we should all avoid stress in whatever ways possible, and of course, nobody likes it.

But there are times when it becomes difficult to avoid stress, as it’s naturally associated with certain major life events.

While some of those life events are somewhat avoidable, others are simply a part of life in general.

The best thing that you can do is, rather than worrying about these events, learning to cope with them.

While there’s nothing wrong with worthing with a psychiatrist or therapist in order to cope better with your stressors, some don’t have the time for that, and for that matter may be opposed for whatever reason to using medications to treat anxiety and depression that can come with stress.

Coping skills are the backbone of however you may choose to deal with stressful events in life.

Let’s look into some of those events, and how you may want to approach them.

1. Moving

We move for a variety of reasons. Indeed, many people make their first moves when they’re just 18 years old, leaving home for the first time.

It’s virtually impossible to make it through life without some kind of move.

Now, how far you move may vary, as may the conditions of your move. Some move because they want to live in a different area, or because they’ve taken a better job or a promotion of some kind.

Others move under conditions that are bound to be stressful, perhaps because they’ve lost their jobs or can otherwise no longer pay their rent or mortgage payments.

Now, there are a lot of ways that you can make your move easier.

If you’re moving a significant distance or moving a larger household, consider working with a professional moving company; about a third of people prefer to do this, as it takes a lot of the responsibility off of their hands directly.

If you can’t hire professional movers, consider asking for help from family or friends.

You don’t have to do it all on your own. Rent a U-haul, and try not to fill your own car with too many items.

Use a checklist to stay organized, and begin the process sooner rather than later.

Letting it build up will only make you more stressed in the long term.

2. Divorce

Divorce doesn’t happen to everyone, thankfully.

But it is more common than many might think, with an estimated 42% to 45% of all first marriages resulting in divorce.

There are a lot of different factors that are stressful in themselves and therefore lead to divorce.

Some may feel as if they have to divorce and that it’s ultimately for the best; and some amicable divorces are not automatically extremely distressing.

However, many divorces do come with some degree of anger or sorrow, and at the minimum mixed emotions.

In order to keep them from becoming overly stressed, it’s advisable for you to use a divorce mediator if possible.

A mediator will help you divide your assets and move forward without the same kind of intervention a lawyer might request.

You may also want to live separately earlier than you perhaps initially intended, to minimize the chance for potential conflict between you and your ex.

Furthermore, if you have children, you should have a custody agreement negotiated as quickly as possible.

This will better ensure that the two of you have less conflict.

3. Injuries At Work

Not everyone has the type of job where injuries are common or for that matter severe.

But anyone can be theoretically injured or made sick at work.

The issue about getting hurt on the job is that it’s not your fault at all, yet you’re left to deal with the consequences, like medical bills or losing time in which you would normally be working.

It’s important that you see if your injury is covered by workers’ compensation.

If your injury is covered by workers’ compensation, you should expect your first temporary disability payment within 14 days after your employer learns about the injury.

Your doctor should be able to verify that you have a job-related injury or illness that prevents you from performing your usual duties.

Of course, if you are not immediately approved for workers’ compensation for unjust reasons, you still have options, and can potentially speak with a lawyer about them.

But try to do so methodically.

Talk to your employer honestly about what happened, and remember that you are not at fault and have a claim to defend.

Though speaking with a lawyer may be stressful at first, having a real handle on your case may actually calm you and make you feel empowered.

There are so many events in life that can cause stress.

But at the end of the day, you should try to approach life in a measured manner.

Stress is the hardest part of many of these challenges. Handle it the best you can.
