Ways to Decorate Your Door for Halloween

Knock, knock! Beware – only open if you dare!

With Halloween just around the corner, we’re in full swing with prepping treats, costumes and decorations. For me, one of the best places to put in that extra “elbow grease” is in my doorway. This is the area where trick or treaters spend the most time so you’ll want to present them with something they’ll remember (treats aside, of course).

Cobwebs and Spiders

Fake cobwebs and spiders are a classic way to decorate your home for Halloween. This year, cover your door-front with a large amount of fake cobwebs to give it an old, creepy look. Start searching for realistic-looking spider toys to add to the spookiness (like this one here). Psst: don’t forget to add some on your doorknob!

Cover it With Streamers

More recently, streamers have been a very popular choice for party decorations. Often used for photo booths and garlands, streamers can also be lots of fun for your Halloween décor. Go for a “mummy theme” and cover your door with white streamers. (Hint: If you decide to dress up as a mummy, you can tell trick or treaters that you’re trying to rewrap yourself since you just faced a gruesome fight with Dracula… they’ll be so creeped out!) Or, go for black streamers and make trick or treaters feel like they’re entering a dark abyss.

Pumpkins Galore

Gather up several pumpkins in a variety of sizes and carve or paint some ultra-spooky faces on them. Remember to keep them in visible areas of your doorway. You don’t want any falling trick-or-treaters.

All Eyes on Trick-or-Treaters

With some Bristol board or construction paper, create huge, creepy eyes (usually yellow eyes with black slits do the trick) and give your door an “evil face” look.

Turn Up the Music

While it’s not necessarily decoration, the right sounds and music always makes for a the perfect ambiance. Hook up and plug in a simple sound system at your doorway so that you the first thing trick-or-treaters will hear will be some creepy tunes or creaking doors.
