Ah the holidays are approaching fast. Halloween is at the end of the week and I can already tell which families are a little over the top in our neighborhood. I’ve already seen the countdowns starting on Facebook about how many Friday’s left until Christmas. Honestly, I do not need that constant reminder. Can’t we just enjoy Halloween? Then Thanksgiving? And right after we’ve stuffed ourselves with turkey then start to think about Black Friday and all the debauchery that will be taking place just minutes after we have given thanks for the blessings in our lives? If you cannot have humor about the holidays then you are not going to survive. Jen Mann has written several comedic books and articles depicting the craziness that we bring on our selves. In her latest book, Spending the Holidays with People I Want to Punch in the Throat, she find the humor in various Holidays.
Are their times you just want to punch someone in the throat? The book is filled with moments that are so completely identifiable for me that I cannot help but bust out laughing. I love the part when Kori, Jullian and Whit are discussing how they each stay organized for Christmas. They are being so nice and complimenting each other on their obsessive behavior with gifts and gift wrapping. Then the topic switches to decorations. Jillian makes a comment about hiring a professional to decorate her home and how impressive it looks. After a few off handed remarks Whit slips in maybe they should do her holiday cards too because they just are not looking that wonderful lately. The passive aggressive behavior went from a nice little chat to an all out mental/verbal war in a nano second! Then the verbal carnage starts flying out of the ladies mouths.
If you are looking for a light read full of humor to help break up the tension and stress of the holidays this book will do it. If you are looking for a stocking stuffer or a book for a good friend this would be perfect too. But be warned – there is a some light swearing. The F bomb is dropped here and there. So probably not the best gift for your child’s teacher or Sunday school teacher.
