Unless you live under a rock, you have heard plenty about the Zika Virus. It’s scary. Whether or not you’re an expecting mom, it’s still a concern. So far, the best way to prevent these bites is with products containing DEET. However, Consumer Reports just issued a statement saying that we shouldn’t use products containing more than 30% DEET. Most products contain 50% or more.
So now what? Well, I have a cheaper, safer, and more natural alternative. Now, before I go any further, I can NOT say this spray will prevent you from getting Zika. I CAN say this spray works. My entire family, including my extended family, has used my home made repellent for a YEAR, and NONE of us have been bitten by a mosquito. More over, my sister tried her regular store bought brand, and mine, and mine worked JUST AS WELL. My spray also keeps flies and gnats from buzzing around your head and face when applied to your face and hair.
Okay, so here’s what you’ll need. First off a spray bottle. I found nice one’s at the Dollar Tree. (Check on the hair care aisle. They come in a pack of three for travel.) You can also get your Witch Hazel while you’re there. Now you’ll need some essential oils. There are many places online to get your oils, just make sure they are pure. You’ll need Lemon Grass, Citronella, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary.
In your bottle mix the following:
- 3 tbsp Witch Hazel
- 30 drops of LEMON GRASS essential oil
- 20 drops of CITRONELLA essential oil
- 10 drops of EUCALYPTUS essential oil
- 5 drops of ROSEMARY essential oil
Shake it up, and you can even add more witch hazel to fill the bottle. THAT’S IT! Shake well before every application. To treat your face, spray on your hands and pat it on your face. We reapply ours every 2 hours or so, and I kid you not, it WORKS. It’s all we use.
