I have been crocheting for the last ten years . Now I will say I only know a few patterns and was never taught how to read a pattern. I basically do my own patterns and make up as I go. I would love to read patterns and be able to make those gorgeous displays.

Well let me let you in on some awesome information that I had no clue about and was excited when I found this information out. Now the books for crocheting and the how to books can be really costly and can be kind of hard to read. I have bought these books and let me say mine have collected dust or I have traded mine for supplies. Now don’t get me wrong some people need the books or like to use books but I am a hands on see it done kind of person. If you are a hands on see it done kind of person then Youtube is your best place to go to watch it being done.  I have found hundreds of how to videos for anything from a double crochet to how to change colors .

Now for the patterns you can go to Pinterest and type in anything you would like to crochet and it will come up and it gives you the website to the pattern. Now the patterns on Pinterest are 99% free and are gorgeous. If you don’t have a pinterest account then you should sign up its so easy to use . There is also a site called revelry. Ravelry is a crocheting and knitting site that you can look up patterns and download them. They have thousnads of patterns to choose from . You also sign up for ravelry also but its simple and also easy to use . Etsy is another site you can use to get patterns but you also have to pay for these patterns but they are worth it if you would like to buy them. Now you can also find free ones as well.

We all know about facebook and let me just say facebook isn’t just for social media and games I have found a few facebook pages that are groups you join for crocheting or knitting. In these groups some of them are free pattern groups , swap and exchange groups, hugs from around the world which is one that does granny squares to mail to people to eventually make a afghan. There are also pages that sell their work and they are worth buying.

Here are a few of the pages for the groups i am also in these groups

Now with  that being said there is several types of Crochet hooks to choose from . I would go to the store and try them out in your hand if you can. There are aluminum and plastic, wood. Now it’s whatever you prefer . There are some hooks that are hand-made and are expensive . I will be doing a review on some handmade hooks that come from Furls look for that review in a few weeks. There are different gauges for different projects and different types of patterns to go with them.

These hooks above show the size of each one      These are great for arthritis        These are the plastic ones

These are some of the fancy Handmade ones

Let’s talk about the yarn. I love yarn and get excited to talk it and to also look at it . Their are several different types of yarn . There is Cotton , acrylic, wool, silk, linen, fun fur, plus many more. You will notice some words on the yarn that you might not know what they mean.

Skein Is a bundle of yarn

A Ply is one strand in the yarn Example 4ply means 4 strands in that skein of yarn.

There are also different weights of yarn to choose from

Superfine

Fine

Light

Medium

Bulky

Super bulky

There are so many colors of yarn to choose from and they change from season to season and you can also get great deals on yarn. If you’re not wanting to spend a lot of money at first I would shop around on the internet at your favorite store and type in yarn see what you can get. I have also signed for craft store emails and mobile alerts and also amazon and ebay are great places to look a well.

I was wondering if you knew of any good blogs that give free patterns or show you how to do the piece they made? I would really like to find some blogs that does that.
