For one, you won’t have to take a trip to the grocery store every time you need produce. This saves you both time and money. Another benefit of growing your own vegetables is that you know exactly where your produce is coming from. And, if you have kids, a vegetable garden is a great way to teach them how food is grown.

Whether you have a small area in your backyard designated for your vegetables or you have a larger space to spare, growing your own produce is a great way to reduce your monthly food bill while feeding your family delicious, nutritious vegetables. However, this does not mean that your garden has to be filled with unattractive bare dirt. As a matter of fact, you can create a garden that’s both functional as well as beautiful. One way that you can achieve these goals is with artificial grass.

What is Artificial Grass?

Artificial grass is a material that is made up of synthetic fibers that look just like real grass. The blades, which are green in color, come in different heights. Rolls of artificial grass are created in a similar fashion to how carpets are made. A roll out artificial grass is designed so it can be easily installed in your garden. It is easy to clean and very low maintenance as it won’t require any mowing or trimming. Originally designed for sports applications, such as football and baseball fields, artificial grass is extremely durable and can stand up to a significant amount of wear and tear.

Today, it is becoming more popular for residential applications, including incorporating the material into vegetable gardens, keeping the yard a beautiful green even when it hasn’t rained in a while. Instead of having brown, brittle grass whether due to maintenance or the seasons, the yard can remain attractive.

While it doesn’t require watering to maintain its vibrant color, artificial grass is porous. This means that water will seep through it, rather than creating giant puddles when it does rain. The ground underneath the artificial grass can still receive the water it needs to remain healthy and nutrient-rich, while your garden remains beautiful and healthy.

Preparing Your Garden for Artificial Grass

Prior to laying down your artificial grass, it is important that you prepare the area first. First, you’ll need to clear away the existing turf. For smaller gardens, you may be able to accomplish this with a spade. If you’re laying down a significant amount of new grass, however, there are a few artificial grass installation tools which are a great help. Next, lay down sand and level it out. The sand is there to act as a base for your grass to sit on. Finally, lay down a weed membrane over the sand to ensure that no weeds are able to poke through.

Installing and Securing Artificial Grass in Your Vegetable Garden

Once your garden is prepared, it’s time to install and secure your artificial grass. The grass comes in rolls. When you lay them down, make sure that you stagger them for a more natural look. At the same time, make sure that the blades are facing the same direction. Use a craft knife to create a clean edge.

It is also important that you secure your new grass in place. Glue separate pieces together. Use a brush on the blades to create a cohesive appearance between the rolls. The edges of your grass should be nailed down as well. Large, galvanized nails, or turf spikes, are a great option. Hammer these nails down so that they are flush with the ground, preventing exposed metal edges. Securing your new lawn is essential for keeping it in place.

Lush Walkways

You will need to walk between your plants in order to water them, tend to them, and pick your produce. Artificial grass makes a great, gorgeous walkway. It adds a softer look to your garden, rather than using paving stones, and provides a great way to keep down dust. Because they stand up to heavy use, you do not need to worry about ruining it while you walk on it. You can pull your garden cart along with you and your grass will still remain beautiful. And when you’re done, you don’t need to worry about tracking dirt and mud into your house.

Creating a Border around Your Vegetables

Artificial grass also makes a great border around your vegetable garden. Not only does the lush color of the grass help to complement your garden, but it also provides several functional purposes as a border as well. For one, artificial grass does not need to be cut. Because of this, you do not need to get as close to your garden with a lawnmower. This helps to protect your garden from potential harm. Artificial grass protects your garden from pests. Because the grass is fake, bugs can’t exactly make their homes there. As a result, they are kept further away from your garden. Additionally, artificial grass around your vegetable garden helps to keep down weed growth. With less bugs and weeds to worry about, you don’t need to worry as much about using harmful pesticides and weed killers.

And, if you live in an area where you might experience drought conditions, artificial grass can come in very useful. You don’t have to worry about watering it to keep it green and vibrant, which means that there is less of a strain on your bank account when it comes to the water bill. Instead, you can reserve your watering only for your vegetables, keeping your garden healthy even when rain is scarce. Your plants don’t have to worry about competing with the grass for water. And, as an added bonus, your artificial grass can actually help with moisture retention, which can help to keep the soil beneath healthy and nutrient rich so that your vegetables have access to everything they need to grow. Creating a vegetable garden doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice the attractiveness of your yard. It is possible to have a garden that provides your family with delicious vegetables and is pleasing to look at. With the help of artificial grass, your garden will be a much more inviting place that you and your family will want to spend time, making gardening a much more enjoyable experience for everyone.

Won’t the artificial grass leach chemicals, including plastic nano-particles into the ground which will in turn be consumed by your veg, which you and your children will then eat?
