Transform a Closet in a workable office!
I love having a space of my own. A spot where I can work, plan and just think on my own. With two kids and a full house, it is hard sometimes to have a spot to call my own. That is when I decided to make a closet into an office.
Step One – Pick a closet!
I chose a closet on my main floor so that I will have easy access to my office. It was a coat closet by the front door. First things to do is of course empty it out. Thankfully, it only had some coats and boots that were easily moved to another closet and I put some in seasonal storage in the basement.
Step Two – Find a Chair!
You might not think it is important to have a chair but I really wanted a spot where I could always have the option of sitting and working. Finding a chair was easy enough but it had to be compact. I had this old fold up chair in the basement but it was the wrong material for the colors I wanted to use. So, I covered it with black. If you haven’t re-done a chair, I highly recommend it. All you need is a staple gun and you are done!
Step 3 – Make a Desk!
Making a desk required some creative thinking and a few trial and error attempts. I used two 3 shelf book shelves that you can find at Walmart for about $15 each. Then I found a shelving board and stretched it across getting it to fit perfectly in the closet. The rest they say is history. The back print is actually one panel of a curtain that I stapled to the back wall. I found this curtain at goodwill for around $4. The shelf I painted white just nailed it into the wall. The chair fits perfectly in the closet even with the door closed.
Step #4 decorate!
Finishing touches are all up to you. I found 4 bins that fit perfectly into my white shelves and this offers me organization and a clean look. Then I added my old style telephone for a fun and other items. Next, I hung a shelf on the right side for some odd and ends and made room for my printer on the desk on the left. I found a rug that was the perfect fit with an alternating pattern. I also have a craft organizer over the door for immediate access to glue sticks, tape and all the other supplies you need on hand.
Overall it was so much fun to make over my boring coat closet into a space of my very own! What do you think of my office? Do you need an office of your very own?
