How To Get Over Your Fear Of The Dentist

If you dread going to the dentist, you aren’t alone. Millions of Americans would rather suffer excruciating toothaches than surrender themselves to dental fear and the mercies of a man with a drill. But why go through all that pain when there’s a simpler solution? Here are three tips for overcoming your odontophobia.

1: Take A Chill Pill

Anti-anxiety medications can soothe the worst of your discomfort when you’re at the dentist. You can also practice breathing or meditation techniques in the waiting room so you don’t tie yourself in knots. If all else fails, tell the receptionist that you’re nervous and would appreciate some small talk to keep your mind off things; most will be happy to oblige.

2: Know Thy Enemy

A lot of people are afraid of dental equipment because they have vague and inaccurate ideas about what they do. If you go to sites like CandaceEvansDDS.com, however, you’ll see that the scary-sounding “digital radiographing” is really just a professional term for “taking pictures of your teeth.”

3: Find A Dentist You Can Trust

You don’t have to let a stranger rummage around in your mouth. If you’re worried about choosing the right dentist, schedule a consultation or exploratory appointment where they’ll do nothing but examine your mouth. If you don’t like the way they treat you, you can leave without any drill coming near you.

These are just three ways to make yourself more comfortable in the dentist’s chair. Don’t let yourself suffer as an adult just because of a childhood fear!
