I recently got the chance to try out Wendy Piersall’s newest adult coloring book. It’s called “Coloring Dream Mandalas.” I was stoked. I had heard about her coloring books on the news. Friends of mine also have them and LOVE them.
Those who follow my “normal” page know that I’m a retired tattoo artist, so art is my thing. I love to color with my son, but get bored coloring such easy pictures. When I opened the Dream Mandalas book, I was excited to dig in.
The images were beautiful, and some even had some really great inspirational quotes. Gone are the days of buying kids coloring books for myself. Wendy Piersall made adult coloring “cool.”
As an autism parent, relaxing is often hard. It’s been proven that coloring, can in fact help with relaxation. So what a better way to relax and bond with your children at the same time.
The first mandala I chose was the moon and stars. For me, a geek and a huge Doctor Who fan, this mandala was really perfect for me. While Liam colored his super heroes, I started in on my page. As per the usual, he lost interest in his coloring book in about 10 minutes. He then wanted mine! I told him no. As a mom, you know that we don’t have a lot of things that are just “ours.” I decided this was just for me.
Today he and his dad went to ran errands, so I decided that while I was doing laundry, I would color and watch Netflix. It really was relaxing. A great way to spend “me time!” I finished my mandala in no time and had a blast coloring. I felt like a kid again!
I already can’t wait to choose my next mandala and get started. I used Liam’s colored pencils for this one, but for the next, I plan on digging out my artist pencils. I will be able to add more details and have more colors to choose from. The pages are heavy enough to use markers, water colors, and even gel pens. I added some “pizazz” to mine with glitter gel pens, and they didn’t bleed through the page at all.
If you are looking for a fun way to relax, or a way to bond with your kid, I truly suggest checking out this coloring book. Wendy Piersall also has other books such as, Animal Mandalas, Flower Mandalas, and Ocean Mandalas. You can find out more on her website.
