When you are getting a new animal it is important to ensure you are making the right choice for both the animal and yourself.
The type of pet you decide on will depend on the environment you are in and the time you have to spend with the animal. Some animals are more dependent then others so if you are away working for a long period of the day it is not advisable to get an animal that needs attention during the day such as a dog. More independent animals include cats and small pets such as a hamster or rabbit.
A dog is brilliant family pet; they are often loving animals that get on well with children. Obviously different breeds are suitable for different lives so do your research on which breeds are best suited to your needs. Labradors are typically loving gentle dogs so if you have small children they could be the safe choice. If you are very energetic and are looking to take your dog on plenty of long walks then a more active breed such as a Springer Spaniel would be a good pet. Remember that dogs do need a lot of attention so they should be attended to throughout the day or allowed access to a toilet area if you can’t be in. If you decide to get a dog then ensure that your house has been pet proofed for them. Make sure you close off any areas you do not want them in and consider protecting furnishings with towels or throws. Get all the necessary dog supplies that you need before the dog arrives home including a dog bed, bowls and leads.
A cat is a good pet if you work long hours and are out of the house a lot. So long as you can leave the cat food and water, a toilet or access to the outdoors and some appropriate cat toys then you can happily leave cats for the day knowing they will not get bored and destroy the house. Cats are generally loving creatures and even though they often come across as aloof they can be really loving and affectionate.
If you are going for a smaller pet that lives in a cage then you need to make sure you buy the correct sized hutch for the animal along with the correct bedding that they need and water bottles and food bowls.
When you first bring a pet into your home make sure you have treated them correctly for fleas and worms and book them in with your local vet for a health check to make sure they are fit and well.
