Even the ladies who try to always maintain beautiful and well-manicured nails have experienced the frustrating moment of braking a nail. It is extremely unpleasant, because the broken nail gets stuck on your clothes and hair, as well as on everything else. Not to mention the fact that this may also be quite painful, if the nail has been broken too high and the nail bed is also damaged.
Fortunately, you do not have to visit a manicurist every time when you break a nail, because there are different ways of fixing a broken nail yourself at home.
First aid for the broken nail
The first thing you need to do if you break a nail, is to prevent any further damages until you get home. Of course, we don’t mean the times when the nails is completely broken and needs to be thoroughly cut and treated with a nail file.
However, if your nail is just partly broken and can be saved, make sure you wrap your fingertip with some tape or bandage in order to prevent further damage. Also, do not stick the tape too much, because you don’t want to curve the nail or break it even more. The best way is to use a sticky bandage. If you don’t have one and choose to use some tape, always put a small piece of paper napkin on the broken nail before sticking the tape.
When you get home, grab a pair of small nail scissors and cut the tape gently. Then check the damages and consider the situation. If it comes to a small crack in your nail, you could try to fix it with some nail glue and some nail strengthener. A good idea is also to slightly reduce the length of the nail by using a proper nail file.
How to fix a broken nail?
Fixing a broken nail is usually not so difficult. One of the most-used techniques of fixing a broken nail includes sticking it with some nail glue. Here is one of the best ways to do it:
What do you need?
· Nail glue
There are different brands of nail glue, which you can choose from. The only thing you need to make sure of is that it really works before starting gluing your nail.
· Nail files
The best choice is the so-called block-file, but don’t worry if you don’t have one. You can use any other nail file, the important part is to choose two of them – a finer and a rougher one.
· A pair of nail scissors
· A package of tea
What is the technique?
The technique is actually pretty simple. Start by picking a cotton swab and impregnate it with nail polish remover in order to clean your nail well. This will also help you remove all leftovers from nail polish or greasy substances such as hand cream, which would prevent the nail glue you apply from sticking.
Gently file the broken area of your nail in order to smooth the roughness of the crack. Then take the tea bag, cut it gently and throw the tea leaves away. After you do that, use the pair of scissors to cut a small piece of the tea bag. You can also use a larger piece that covers your entire nail, but if you choose to do so you should know that the results are often not very satisfactory.
Apply some glue on the broken area of your nail and before it has gone dry, position the piece of the tea bag you have already cut on top. Leave it dry, and then apply a second layer of the glue. After the glue is totally dry, use the scissors to cut the protruding ends of the paper.
The next step is filing your nail again, with the rougher nail file. Thin the dried nail glue gently, but make sure it is completely dry before you start. Choose a more abrasive file at first, and then proceed with a finer one. Do not forget to use the files only where the glue has been applied.
Finally, remove the dust and apply some nail polish base.
