MacBooks change lives.
When you upgrade from a PC to a MacBook, you find yourself meeting needs you never before knew you had.
This is only a slight exaggeration because the Mac ecosystem really does make life easier.
Take, for example, the MacBook camera.
It’s a great tool for taking care of some of your most important business and personal projects.
Take a look at this step by step guide to getting the most out of your MacBook camera.
MacBook Camera in Photo Booth
Open the Photo Booth application in the Applications folder.
Most MacBooks store the Applications folder in the main Finder window.
After Photo Booth opens, your camera should be on automatically.
The green light next to the camera should be illuminated.
The next step is to start the camera using the red button beneath your live image.
You’ll notice the Photo Booth app begins to countdown.
This is the timer countdown to when the photo is taken.
The picture taken appears in the toolbar below where you can view it.
Most Photo Booth apps default to a multi-photo setting where more than one picture is taken at once.
When you take photos of yourself this way, you’ll have to import the photos out of Photo Book and into another software where you want to use it.
For example, if you’re looking to create a slideshow with the images, you’ll import them into Photos where you can edit them into a slideshow alongside other images.
PhotoBooth also creates videos.
The same applies to recorded video files.
If you want to edit them, you’ll need to import them to iMovie.
The best way to keep track of the file, however, is to first save it to its own folder.
Can I Snap Photos from Desktop?
One downside to the MacBook camera is that you can’t simply open it and use it as its own tool.
It’s married to multiple apps that have their own rules.
The main way to use it to create photos and videos is by using Photo Booth.
But there’s no quick launch feature that makes this tool superior to, let’s say, iChat.
Unlike tools like Preview, PhotoBooth doesn’t launch automatically with certain commands.
This is a major downside to using your MacBook camera on the fly.
It doesn’t allow the picture taking process to stand alone from the many gimmicks of Photo Booth.
But here are a few other ways you can use your MacBook camera.
One of the top ways to use a MacBook computer is video calls.
Your camera automatically launches when you click the FaceTime icon on your MacBook.
There’s an option to make a video call or audio call when you open FaceTime.
Use the video option to open up a window where the live camera appears.
You can screenshot an image of yourself before the call to take a picture.
The FaceTime camera also allows you to take stills but you’ll have to start the call before this option appears on the screen.
It appears as a white button in the bottom lower portion of the FaceTime window.
The still images are automatically saved to your desktop.
Keep in mind that the images you take include the person you’re talking to on FaceTime.
There is no option to take only a picture of yourself on a FaceTime call.
You can use your MacBook camera from within iMovie when you need additional video footage.
Click ‘File’ then ‘Import from Camera.’
A live image of yourself from the MacBook camera appears.
Start recording. The completed video will open in the editing window of iMovie.
Can’t I Just Use My Phone?
There are moments when your cell phone camera just won’t cut it.
Moments when you’re trying to finish up a video edit and need more footage to make the story come together.
Another example is if you need a quick photo to add to a document when you’re pressed for time.
Yes, there are options to email photos to yourself, download the photos, and import them into the document.
But that’s a waste of many steps when there’s a MacBook camera waiting to meet all your photo and video needs.
The camera turns on automatically when you start up your computer unless you direct it otherwise.
The photos you take automatically import into the Photos app on your computer.
They’re accessible from this app and any other software you’re working from so there’s no need to change their location or name.
People use files created with the MacBook camera to create everything from videos in iMovie to GIFs in Photoshop.
What happens when you find the camera not working on macbook? You’ll start by restarting your machine.
If the camera is set to open on startup, there shouldn’t be a delay.
Sometimes if you’ve gone a long time without turning off your computer you’ll notice glitches.
The second thing to look out for is whether or not your software is up to date.
An outdated OS is sure to give you problems that affect the computer’s performance.
This is both a gift and a curse on a MacBook.
Apple almost forces you to keep the most current OS and when you refuse you notice changes immediately to the performance of your machine.
MacBook Camera Features
The MacBook camera serves many programs on your computer.
There’s no single way to use it or get it to work without the help of an app.
Unlike your phone’s camera though, you can record into several different high-powered software so you can tackle big projects quickly.
