Cuba has long been considered one of the best destinations in the Caribbean – once the home of  Ernest Hemingway, who wrote his famous books For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea at his residence there in Finca Vigia. Today, Cuba remains a fantastic place to get-away to, with a mix of modernized resorts and the classic city style of the 1950s. Here are just a few things to keep in mind when planning your trip to this beautiful and historic island.

Getting your tourist card/visa and travel insurance

In order to enter Cuba you will need a green Tourist Card/Visa, which is sometimes included in vacation packages, but most often must be collected from the local Cuban Embassy or Consulate—applications can be downloaded from the their website, and the cost is £15.

Buying adequate travel and medical insurance before heading to Cuba is an absolute must, and before purchasing be sure that your provider will honour your policy in Cuba, as some American based firms will not help you while you’re on Cuban soil. Be sure to receive written confirmation that you’re covered, and also that your provider has a 24hr helpline available to you.

The must-see places

Playa Paraiso—This beach is often considered to be the finest in Cuba, and features a shallow lagoon with crystal clear waters and a sandbar pathway that connects in a circle with the beach. Whether you’re going it alone or headed with friends, grab a drink at the cozy beach bar and get ready for some relaxation.

Old Havana—The old city is filled with beautiful colonial architecture and traditional Cuban cafés, bars, restaurants, and an array of Cuban art and music. Be sure to make it to the Plaza Vieja and the Plaza de la Catedral, and the National Museum of Fine Art.

Trinidad de Cuba—It might be a bit of a trip form Havana, but the quaint colonial town is like no other in the country, with colourful streets and a slow easy-going pace of life, you’ll never want to leave.

If you don’t want to be disappointed by your next big holiday vacation, be sure to Visit Cuba, as it has all the beautiful scenery of the Caribbean, and a unique history that is bound to amaze you. Check out these great holidays from saga for inspiration!
