If you love your first cup of coffee in the morning but want a bit of variety every now and then, you can always ring the changes by trying different coffee syrups to flavour your favourite roasted blend with. Long the preserve of the coffee shop, you can now buy almost any flavour coffee syrup to have at home. Favourites include vanilla, hazelnut, gingerbread and caramel; all of which can counter the acidity of coffee and, of course, add sweetness.
Another way to enjoy coffee is to have it in a dessert. Tiramisu is an Italian dessert that is made with coffee, chocolate and mascarpone cheese, and often features in Italian restaurant menus. It’s easy to whip up a tiramisu at home, though, and it’ll have your dinner guests raving about your culinary skills!
If you want a coffee hit in the summer, but don’t feel like a hot drink, then instead of iced coffee, try an affogato. This can also be served as a dessert – one of the easiest on the planet to prepare; vanilla ice cream with an espresso poured on the top.
You can even put coffee in your cooking. Fancy an espresso with your baked beans on toast? Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! It may sound strange, but it somehow works, giving the beans a smoky aftertaste that is delicious, if a little unexpected.
Of course, beyond changing the ways in which you consume your coffee, you can also broaden the variety in the way you drink a normal cup. Think of yourself as an espresso girl who drinks her coffee on the go and tends to down it in one? Try a latte one day – drinking a milky coffee can have a really calming and comforting effect; perfect for when you feel like snuggling up in an armchair to relax in front of your favourite TV show.
It’s always good to mix things up a little on the coffee front, safe in the knowledge that if you try something you don’t enjoy, you can always go back to your favourite old cup of joe!
