Electronic cigarettes, or ‘ecigs’ as they are often known, are becoming more and more popular as an alternative to smoking tobacco. They are widely believed to be less harmful than normal cigarettes, and you can choose whether to have nicotine in your ecig at all, and if you do have it, how strong a dose you want. Ecigs have helped a lot of people quit smoking cigarettes, and they are also permitted in more places than smoking cigarettes, which is especially helpful when travelling.

Of course, while ecigs are useful things for smokers to have when they travel, they are still electronic devices, so if you are travelling in America it is worth knowing where the TSA stand on letting you take them on the plane in your carry on luggage.

Ecigs Are Permitted in Carry On Luggage

The first and most important thing is, ecigs are not banned from being placed in carry on luggage, and you should have no problem getting past security with them. Your eliquids will be treated the same as any other liquids, so you will need to put them in a zip up plastic bag along with any other permitted liquids you are carrying, but this is standard for any fluids you might want to take on board in your hand luggage.

Tips for Travelling With Your Ecig

Ecigs are common, and it is very unlikely your TSA agent won’t know what it is you are carrying, however, to make things faster you can disassemble your ecig so it looks less suspicious and put it back together after you clear security. It is best to put chargers, battery packs and anything else electronic related to your variable voltage ecig in your laptop or tablet case (if you are travelling with one) with any other electronic chargers and bits and pieces you might have.

Just in Case

There are almost no stories of people not being allowed to take their ecigs on a plane, but what some people do to be on the safe side is also carry a self addressed envelope big enough for their ecig, so they can send it back to themselves if for some reason the TSA won’t let them take it on in their hand luggage.

Vaping on a Plane

While you are allowed to carry your ecig, this does not necessarily mean you are allowed to use it on the plane. While not illegal, airlines have different policies on this because the sight of the vapour can freak out passengers who believe it is smoke. Ecigs can in some cases set off smoke alarms too, so if your airline says no to vaping, then it is best not to attempt to do it in secret – a smoke alarm going off on a plane understandably causes chaos and panic!

Ecigs can be a great alternative to smoking and as yet, the TSA has no problem with you carrying one. However, do check with your airline before you try to actually use it once on board.
