So you’ve spent all that time and money and effort tiling your kitchen, bathroom or even both. Once everything is completed, your handiwork is probably looking pretty darn good but how can you keep it that way? Follow the hints and tips below to make sure your tiles look as good as new for years to come.
Keep them clean…
This might seem blindingly obvious but it is essential that you clean your tiles regularly. You need to give them a clean around once a week to ensure they stay in great condition. Staining is difficult to remove once it’s there so try to avoid that happening as much as possible. A solution consisting of a little bleach mixed with water is thought to be one of the most effective mixtures to clean your tiles and leave them looking brand new. Ensure you rinse them thoroughly afterwards as the bleach may have an adverse effect if left on your tiles for too long.
Once you’ve given your tiles a good clean, it’s important to keep them dry as much as possible. Obviously, they are going to get wet in bathrooms or if they are by a sink but use a soft towel to dry them afterwards. It might seem like a tedious task, but a few seconds spent drying them off can give your tiles a considerably longer life. If you have an extractor fan, ensure it’s switched on after the tiles have been exposed to moisture. Alternatively, open a window to allow fresh air to circulate. If sealant or tiles are left wet for too long, discolouration can occur and the sealant can start to come loose; neither are situations you want your tiles to be in.
While it might be tempting to dive straight in and enjoy your new tiling, try to hold off for a while. In the case of a bathroom, the tiles are likely to get damp and warm, so give it a clear 24 hours before using the room. This gives the tiles a chance to set properly and the adhesive can dry fully. If you go in too soon, you run the risk of damaging the work. For some adhesives, it is recommended to wait two full weeks to allow your tiles to completely dry out. If you have access to another bathroom, it’s worth following this advice so that you can get the longest amount of use out of your tiles.
A little extra love and attention is really all it takes to ensure your tiles give you the maximum amount of use. If you neglect them, they are likely to suffer damage and the wears of time much sooner than if they had been shown a bit of care. Ultimately, you spent a fair amount of time and money on putting them down in the first place so think about getting your money’s worth for them. The last thing you want is to have to start all over again after a few months because you didn’t take proper care of them.
