Having a baby is such an amazing time. The pregnancy, all being well, can be such an enjoyable time. Watching your bump grow and feeling the baby move is the best feeling. You miss it when it is gone! It can be quite a busy time, though, especially with your first baby.
There are a lot of things to buy and have ready at home. It can be a little overwhelming knowing what you need to buy. Here are a few things that I found essential and think that you will too. Of course, there are the standard things like a car seat and stroller that you will buy. I’m sharing a list of the things that you don’t usually think of. So read on to learn more. They are still important to remember and are important to make life with a newborn easier.
Whichever way you choose to feed your baby, there are a few things you will need to make it easier. If you have chosen to breastfeed, think about getting shields to protect your nipples from getting sore in the early days. When a latch has been established, it becomes much easier. You should also think about getting several nursing bras and nursing tops. They make feeding so much easier and discreet, particularly when you’re in public. Along with these, make sure you get plenty of nursing pads for the inside of your bra. Pack these in your hospital bag as you’ll want to use them right away.
The best thing that I think you need when nursing is a nursing cover. It helps so much to have your hands free when feeding. A blanket is too fussy, and you’ll be worrying that it will fall off or that your baby can’t breathe. Nursing covers go around your neck, kind of like a giant bib, but they leave both of your hands-free to hold the baby and get ready to feed. It helps so much to be able to breastfeed with confidence in public.
If you are bottle feeding, make sure you have plenty of bottles ready to go. A large steriliser will be important so that you can have a lot of bottles ready to go at once. In the early days, the last thing you will want to do is be washing up bottles several times a day.
Another essential for feeding, either way of feeding, is muslin burp cloths. They are light and thin and are a must have. Because they are light, they wash well and dry fast. You will use these a lot for baby throw up and milk spillages so you’ll be washing them often. It is always a good idea to have a few in your diaper bag, at all times!
A good diaper bag is a must too. You will be taking it everywhere for a while so make sure it is one that you love. Plenty of storage is important as you will be needing room for extra clothes, burp cloths, bibs, diapers and bottles. Oh and wipes! You need so many things for a newborn! If there is a detachable changing mat, that is even better. It makes being out and about so much easier, knowing that you can change your baby pretty much anywhere.
