As you know when we were preparing to move we packed up most of our clothes. For me, this was a bit of a revelation. The fact that I had so few items to wear made me think very carefully about what I bought for the summer.
After a couple of weeks, I realized that living with a capsule wardrobe was actually fun, not the bore I thought it would be. Far from it, I actually enjoyed it and learned a lot from doing it. If you fancy putting together a minimalist wardrobe below is a roundup of the basics you will need.
A good pair of jeans or trousers
Even during the summer, it is worth investing in a nice pair of jeans. You will wear them a lot. As you can see here, there are plenty of different styles to choose from, this year. This makes it easy to find jeans that are smart enough to be worn for a party, as well as around the house, or for playing with the kids.
For the summer, it is probably best to buy a lightweight denim pair. Provided they are made from 100% cotton, they will allow your skin to breathe.
Clothes made from natural fibers
In fact, in the summer wearing natural fabrics is a really good idea. They look great and will help to keep you cool. Cotton t-shirts work just as well for wearing at home, to the beach, cycling or walking the dog.
For work or days out, a few stylish tops are a good option. Try to pick styles that can be dressed up or down. That way you can just as easily wear them to the office as you can to a party or barbecue.
A good-quality lightweight jacket
A nice formal, or semi-formal, jacket makes it easy to create new outfits using clothes you already own. This year, bomber and denim jackets are the big trends. They look great and work really well in an informal setting. However, they are rarely smart enough to wear to the office. If you need to look smart most days, and are on a limited budget a nice two or three buttoned suit style jacket could be a better option. This can easily be worn over a dress, or paired with a blouse and skirt. Provided you choose the right type of fabric, it can just as easily be worn with jeans, in a more casual way.
An elegant pair of sandals
For warmer days, sandals are usually the best option. Just be sure to choose a pair of shoes that are comfortable as well as stylish. Bear in mind that most people´s feet swell slightly in warm weather. Therefore, it is best to leave your summer shoe shopping until the afternoon. It is also wise to have at least one pair of closed-in shoes to wear on rainy or cold days.
