When I was offered the opportunity to check out this line of learning fun for kids, I jumped at the chance. Liam loves learning about animals, and who better to learn from than the Smithsonian.
The day they came he exclaimed, “It’s like Christmas in Summer!” He was right!
We immediately dove in! His first choice was one of the books. He picked Smithsonian Sticker Creations – Under the Sea. He loved putting stickers on the pages. He worked until the placement was PERFECT! As a mom of a special needs kid, I have to say I love how this book made him work on his fine motor skills. Here he is working on his skills, and he thought he was just playing! 😉
Next up was the Dinosaur Sticker Book. Again, he loved it. He really enjoyed matching up the stickers with the dino shapes. The books are beautiful. Bright, colorful pictures, and the sticker can really be used again and again! However, don’t let your kiddo pull the sticker pages from the back! Liam did, and then some of the regular book pages started to come loose.
So, being the nerd I am, I love learning too! I dove into the Smithsonian Everything You Need To Know cards. I chose the grades 2-3 box. The cards were amazing. Clear, concise information, paired with colorful, engaging pictures. Liam calls them “Smarticle Cards!” (They have more versions for younger and older kids too! Check them out!)
DID YOU KNOW?
That your stomach blushes? If you pass gas, and you blush from embarrassment, your stomach blushes too! Liam thought this was hysterical!
Your brain, when awake can power a small light bulb! Liam exclaimed, “That’s why in cartoons when they get an idea, a light bulb comes on!”
Fish get age rings much like a tree!
The South Pole is actually a DESERT! Yes, a desert! It also has only ONE sunrise and sunset. In the summer it’s light for 24 hours a day, and in the winter, it’s dark for 24 hours a day. This blew Liam’s mind!
And lastly, Mt. Everest grows 1 inch every 4 years due to the movement of the plates.
We learned these fun facts in a matter of minutes! Not only was Liam entertained, but so was I.
Lastly, we got the Smithsonian Young Explorers: 50 States. It’s a giant 130 piece floor puzzle. Again, this was working Liam’s fine motor skills, and he thought he was just playing! He was learning as well! It helped solidify his learning of where each state belongs in the good ol’ USA! It also came with an alphabetical fact book that contained info on each state. Such as state bird, state flower and so on.
All in all, we were both super impressed with all the things that Smithsonian sent us. Liam was learning and having fun. As we say in our house, “Learning is FUNdamental!” As an autism mom, I was happy that Liam was enjoying learning, and that he was working his fine motor skills at the same time. I too also enjoyed learning right along side him!
Long story short, these items were amazing! My kiddo and I are enjoying them every day! So check them out!
