The Reasons that Women Wear Wigs

The Reasons that Women Wear Wigs

In the past, you might not have seen your grandmother taking off her wig at night, but you were probably fully aware that she was wearing one. Even though your grandmother was probably trying to make that wig look as natural as possible, the fake hair was still pretty easy to distinguish from real hair. This difference in appearance, and often the certain level of discomfort that wigs can cause, meant that wigs were used when they were necessary, but only then. Today many women eagerly choose to wear hair wigs and might have several in their collection. What is it that has made wigs so popular today? Underlying this growing popularity are several reasons:

Wigs Cover Up Medical Conditions

This motivation to wear wigs isn’t new. Women undergoing chemotherapy might choose to wear wigs until they are able to regrow their natural hair. Other conditions such as alopecia, lupus, and psoriasis might lead to hair loss. There are also plenty of health reasons, such as a recent illness, changes in hormones, poor nutrition, sustained stress, or a recent medication change. Any of these conditions might lead to hair loss and this hair loss often prompts women to start wearing wigs.

Tip: If you are wearing a wig because of medical reasons, you may be able to get some reimbursement from your insurance company. You might need to make sure that the wig qualifies as a “cranial hair prosthesis” and you’ll probably have to label it as such for the purposes of the insurance company.

Wigs Are Worn as Part of Religious Observances

In some religious traditions, a wig or other hair piece is worn as a head covering to convey modesty.

It’s Easy to Change Styles, Lengths, and Colors

Some women choose to wear hair wigs for the same reasons that they have more than one pair of shoes in their closet. Different activities, different days, call for different hair styles. It is fast and convenient to change from a professional-looking wig to something a little bit fun and flirty when wigs are involved. The wig reduces the need to head into a stylist for any upcoming event.

One day may seem to be perfect for a short, spiky, red wig while the next requires a bouncy, blond ponytail. A collection of wigs in a variety of colors and styles can be as fun to accumulate as a collection of purses. The real enjoyment, however, comes with wearing the wigs.

Wigs Provide Relief from Bad Hair Days

Some women have fantastic hair and make a habit of styling and enjoying their hair almost every day. From time to time, however, the bad day is inevitable. It will crop up, usually at the worst possible moments. In order to succeed in this type of situation, some people keep a wig or two on hand. After smoothly down their “bad hair” and fitting on a cap, these women are ready to snug their wig on and head out into their day.

When it comes to today’s wigs, there are plenty of reasons to purchase your own wigs or hair extensions. This can give you the freedom to try something new just for fun or can fill a need when your own hair is damaged.

I've noticed that today there are lots of options on wigs. Are there some medical conditions that are caused as a result of excessive wig use? Like if used on a daily basis, is there a negative effect on the scalp? Seems like it would save a lot of prep time and upkeep!
